We recently connected with Jason Caldwell and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
For nearly 20 years I worked in TV News in Mobile Alabama, Jacksonville Florida and Atlanta Georgia as a photojournalist and most of the stories were hard, meaning they usually had to do with murder, robbery or something very negative. I recently started Umage Media with a goal of telling businesses story in a positive way. Who they are, why they do what they do and the ways they benefit the community.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been fascinated with video most of my life and began doing it professionally in the early 2000’s. Our goal is to bring a businesses story to life by asking the right questions in a way that they tell their own story. We capture video of what it is they do and put it all together in a way that highlights their business, products, brand and most importantly the value they bring. Working in television I gained a passion for listening to peoples stories and putting them together in a way that’s easy to understand. I take pride when a business tells us how much their video helped them.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Before I was creating video professionally I was a musician on a cruise ship. In 2001 I was sent out of Galveston TX. Every time I was on a ship I made it a priority to get my hair cut. This time was no different and when I arrived on the ship I booked my appointment. To my surprise the hairstylist that would cut my hair, a British girl named Donna would end up being my wife of more than 20 years. She is my biggest supporter and helper with getting things done with the business and without her it may be nearly impossible.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In 2018 I was living in Atlanta GA working at a local news station WSB Channel 2. My home was in Semmes AL and we had beef away for several years now. In February of that year my father passed away and we decided we should head back home to live in Alabama. In 2020 right as the pandemic was picking up we were able to make the move. The Job I had lined up fell through. After some time I was able to land a few off on end gigs with the last one lasting some time before losing it suddenly and unexpectedly. After months of searching with no luck I finally decided with not many opportunities in my area and in my field of work that I needed to create my own opportunities and though it’s been hard we are getting clients and things are getting better but now it’s on my terms and I have my own business Umage Media!
