We were lucky to catch up with Ghosty recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ghosty, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Growing up I knew I wanted to do something different than what my parents did or saw other adults do. I started playing music in the 1st grade. I asked my parents if I could join the girl scouts and they we’re like, nope but you can learn an instrument. So, that was the beginning of that. I never saw music as something I wanted to do full time. I always loved to write and wanted to be an author (still do). It wasn’t until I was like 19 that I started thinking about what it would be like if I pursued music full time? I didn’t know what that would be or look like exactly, I just knew that I wanted to explore that. Soon after I met my best friends– Clay and Charles. We all went to the same music school and just kind of clicked. For a school project I had to put together a band and put out a song. Thus was the creation of Ghosty & Letters to Laurel. For about 5 years now we’ve just been having a great time together. Hanging out, making music and just enjoying each others’ presence. We want Ghosty to be the band that feels like coming home.
Ghosty, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Ghosty is a collaborative project created by myself (Nayara Nieto), Clay Carmody & Charles Stout. We were just a couple of kids who wanted to make music and hangout. We love to create music that resonates not only with us but with others as well. We love getting to get together with different people to create something that we have fun listening to and writing. A lot of times we can get stuck on one mindset and start to create art that we don’t even know we necessarily like. Ghosty’s ambition is to try and create a space where we can feel safe and excited. The biggest goal of mine with Ghosty is to connect with people. Whether that be through collaboration with music or artwork or just creating music that means something to people.
Im extremely proud of our growth throughout being together. Every moment is cherished and loved.
We are privileged to get to do what we love and have the tools to be able to put it out into the world!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Definitely the connections I get to make with people. I’ve met so many wonderful, talented human beings who I most likely would have not crossed paths with if it weren’t for our mutual art. Also, sharing my artwork and it resonating with people is such a gift. It makes being vulnerable a little less scary.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch is an essential read. It is a professors ‘Last Lecture’ where he just talks about his life and imparts his wisdom and philosophies on life.
It just completely altered the way I view life. I try to be really intentional about viewing the world the way Dr. Pausch did.
