We recently connected with Marina Serdyuk and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Marina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I feel like doing what I do is a lifelong process. It’s always changing and evolving depending on what I want to do creatively. I’ve been taking voice lessons and writing music most of my life. That said, to this day I still struggle with patience and consistency. And from what I’ve learned over the years, that’s truly the key to speeding up the process. One of my voice teachers put it nicely: “Go slow to learn fast.” I try to remember that when I get impatient. I’d say the biggest obstacles have been time and commitment. Sometimes you just have to make time, and sometimes you have to commit to doing it even when you don’t want to.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Absolutely! I’m an independent singer/songwriter. I’ve been writing music since college and my songs are my babies! Each piece I write is a little piece of my soul from a different time and place. I hope that people can relate to each song I write, because each one is from a real life experience that I’ve had. Honestly, what I’m most proud of is continuing to create at this point in my life. Most people I know gave up on their dream a long time ago. They’ve shifted all of their focus to their day jobs, kids, and other responsibilities. I’m still trying to keep mine alive. As long as I keep creating, and touch even just one person with my music, then the dream is still alive and it’s all worth it.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
This is a great question! In this day and age, follow us on our social media platforms, and share our work with your friends and family. It’s really hard these days as an indie artist. If you don’t have a strong following already, you have a very small chance of being noticed by anyone in the big leagues (major labels, publishers, etc). With every song that you stream and share with your friends, you’re helping that artist gain more fans and grow their audience. Same goes for when you comment on their content, share their posts, and come out to see them live.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes! My overarching mission is to emotionally connect and touch people with my music, whether that means my song made them cry, smile, dance, or laugh. And the goal is to get it out to as many listeners as possible! So please go stream my music. Another goal I have (which relates to the first) is to get my songs placed in film or tv. I think music brings every moment that we watch to life! To have one of my songs placed in a major Netflix film or tv show would be incredible.
