Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Satori Barrett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Satori, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
Learning has never been linear for me. I have always taken the knowledge given to me and self observed in all my various positions. I always knew that I wanted to be my own boss some day; making my own schedule, saying yes and no to the things that fulfilled me but I never knew what it was going to look like. Over the course of the last five years or so I knew I was getting closer – booking more jobs that felt meaningful, having a part-time hustle and constantly making connections. I’ve worked for a lot of small businesses before getting to this point and one lesson that has always stood out to me the most is that if you’re going to work with other people you have to respect their working habits. We don’t all operate the same and thats a given but if we have a common goal or product in mind than working together is always going to be stronger than competing. I’ve had a couple of bosses who have tried to control the way that I work and function in my job regardless if I was completing and excelling and those are the companies that lost a lot when we parted ways. I feel like if you can have a flexible workspace, adapt to various humans and their abilities and celebrate peoples strengths than it is possible to grow a really successful and beautiful team. I think sometimes letting go of some control helps empower your employees and creates a much better work environment. I don’t have employees in my current business but I work with many different personalities and I think one of the reasons I have been successful is because I have the ability to adapt to different personalities and work styles.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a creative problem solver and digital world enthusiast! I love to work with people who are working on building their online presence, want to rebrand or are just lost in their direction. I started off by just doing online administrative work and creating websites and it just grew from there. I am almost entirely self taught and damn proud of it. I have worked with a lot of successful small business owners and have gained copious amounts of knowledge from them and am forever grateful.
Creating visually pleasing, user friendly and dynamically strong websites is my bread and butter. It makes me excited, it constantly challenges me and I am always learning. I love working with fellow business owners who really don’t know what they are doing but are eager to make changes and get serious about their business. Writing, marketing and coaching are just some of the skills that go into making a successful website, business plan and pathway to success. I have been doing this for a long time now and it brings me so much joy to watch my clients glow when they are successful in their business ventures.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I used to work in the financial world. I was always a creative but I also have a deep desire for technical and logical work. The bank was great and I learnt many valuable lessons but I got to a point where I couldn’t press the same buttons, look at the same walls and have the same boring conversations around the coffee machine every morning. I knew something had to change. I was really inspired by my partner at the time who lived on the other side of the world and was constantly traveling and making a life for herself. I quit my job. I quit financial security, I quit routine and I quit knowing what the next day had in store – it was the best decision and the scariest of my life! I packed up a bag, my camera and my laptop and flew to Mozambique. From there we built a business consulting hotels and accommodations around the continent of Africa. We creating marketing material like promotional videos and new website imagery for hotels, safaris and homesteads for six months and it was brilliant. This truly was the foundation for what I do today. Without learning all those skills I don’t know that I would be successful in my field today.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Being consistent with the clients that you have will help you gain more. I think that having a strong understanding of what you offer and your worth goes a very long way. I have for sure lost clients along the way for one reason or another but if I’ve learnt anything in these years of working on my own its that when you are consistent with your boundaries and quality – your clients will stick around and they will suggest your services to others. Word of mouth and recommendations have taken me really far and I am super proud of my reputation.
