We were lucky to catch up with Kindale Godbee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kindale, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Kindale Godbee – proud owner of The Heir Salon and Family .
‘‘Ever since giving myself my first buzz cut (don’t worry, I have improved since then!) I fell in love with hair, and the beauty in not only the transitioning process, but in myself. My mission is to help all members of The Heir Family find that beauty in all aspects of hair and life.
In addition to passing all of my final tests with high scores, and being top of the class at Paul Mitchell I also received certification in coloring, natural hair, and hair extensions from all over, including Atlanta and New York.
I became aware of and sensitive to the challenges of natural hair and keeping up with the trends and can provide professional solutions to make you look and feel fabulous! I wanted to create a safe space for everyone to go and grow through their natural journey.
Kindale, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the beauty industry because, I did not see the beauty in myself first. From cutting all of my hair and being bullied for the start of what I thought was going to be a beautiful journey. Turning the narrative around and learning to love the process of growing my hair; sharing that love with others is all that I wanted to do.
It took a lot of discipline to get to this point in my career. From missing out on college, to telling my friend ” No, I can’t hangout tonight. ” I had to sacrifice thing to save for my salon and work on my craft.
Creating a safe space for the Natural Hair Community was my goal. I educated myself and continue to educate myself in all hair type from 2a to 4c. I am extremely proud to say that I a strong voice and leader in the Natural Hair Community!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I am old school when it comes to marketing and gaining and keeping a social media presence. I believe that word of mouth is THE BEST marketing tool. There is nothing like getting a recommendation from someone you know and trust! Unfortunately I can’t dance; so you will not see me Going Viral for that. Also going up to people in person telling them who I am and what I do helps create a friendly conversation, that turns into a follow, which turns into a booking ,proceeding a long term client. I do not try to beat the algorithm; I simply create my own rhythm by remaining myself.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Every lesson I had to learn has made myself and my business strong. The foundation of my business is transparency. This means what ever lesson I learn good or bad my clients and my staff are the first to know. I have learned that this builds trust with my clients and staff. Everyone feels like they are growing with the business instead of watching the business grow from the sideline. For example a loss I took in the beginning of my career was my first salon suite raised my rent 50% over night. I had one night to pack my things and move into a different space, at the time I could not afford the increased rent. I could have made it seem to my clients that the move was for expansion. I was honest, and more people supported me and funded my dreams. Now I have a salon that builds off of the same foundation.
