Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Asia Monay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Asia, thanks for joining us, excit ed to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My mother has encouraged me to pursue my career as a creative from the start. The first art show I had was very difficult putting together. I remember being riddled with anxiety and self doubt. I didn’t think my work was good enough and considered calling it off. My mom, Wanda Smith, wouldn’t have it. She helped me with the concepts of every painting. She purchased much of my supplies. She went to all the venues I considered having the show at and asked questions I didn’t think to ask. She helped stay on schedule. She helped with invitations and decorations and food for the show. I gained so much strength and confidence because of her. Even though we live in different states now, she continues to be my greatest support and unofficial assistant for every show.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I began painting full time in 2016, and I published my first poetry book this year. I was drawn to being a creative originally because I found it to be a great and healthy coping mechanism. I suffer from severe mental health issues including bipolar disorder, anxiety, ptsd, and substance and alcohol abuse. Art and poetry helped me slowly get out of the darkness I had created in my life because of these issues. It helped me understand myself and why I was behaving in such self destructive ways. Once I got to a healthier headspace I realized that I could use these same gifts to help others. Now, every painting and poem are created with the goal of giving back in mind. My clients are able to pull strength from my transparency.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn bring a workaholic. I have always thought that I was of no real use if I was not working or progressing constantly. Although it’s a great strength to have a good work ethic and drive, it can become counter productive. I found myself getting to the point of burnout because I was not taking the proper time to rest. Now I see the value of balancing work and self care.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is looking back at the finished product and realizing “I really did that.” I have grown to be very proud of my work and how far I have come as an artist and writer.
