We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Hummel Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah Hummel , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I currently work for a non profit where I can work within my field of ceramics, however my goal is support my lifestyle from making ceramics alone! I think if I knew how to reach a wider audience via the internet and instagram my online sales and national representation would happen.
Sarah Hummel , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Sarah Hummel Jones is originally from Indiana. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH. After graduation Jones moved to Chicago, IL where she attended The School of the Art Institute Chicago for a year and received a Post Baccalaureate in Ceramics. Jones received a Masters of Fine Art in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2014 and shortly after graduation, moved to Brooklyn, NY and worked as a ceramic technician & assistant. Sarah Hummel Jones has been living in Omaha for past 7 years and works at the Union for Contemporary Art as the Co-Op Studio Manager.
I think the decorative aspect of my work is what sets me apart from a lot of other ceramic artist. Representation of a black women on pottery is a large part to the work. I am most proud of the following and support I have received since starting Clay Club Ceramics two years ago.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I am a firm believer that art should be for everyone so I try to keep asseccibility in mind when making and selling my work. Id like the viewer to be able to collect multiple pieces or gift pieces to friends!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part is teaching the craft of ceramics to others!
