Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nequia Hill. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nequia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
As a dreadlock stylist, I can tell you that earning a full-time living from my creative work has been an incredible journey. It’s definitely not something that happened overnight, but I’m grateful for the path that led me here.
When I first started out, I focused on building my skills and developing a strong portfolio. I invested in training and education to ensure that I was providing the best possible service to my clients. In the beginning, I took on whatever work I could get and didn’t always charge what I was worth. But over time, as my skills and reputation grew, I was able to charge more and attract higher-paying clients.
Another major milestone for me was establishing a solid client base. I worked hard to build relationships with my clients and create a positive experience for them. Word-of-mouth referrals became a huge part of my business, and that helped me to grow my clientele.
If I could go back in time and give myself advice, I would tell myself to focus on marketing and branding earlier on. It’s important to have a strong online presence and to create a recognizable brand that sets you apart from other stylists. Additionally, I would have started charging what I was worth from the beginning and not undersell myself.
Overall, I’m grateful for the journey and the challenges that have come with it. Building a successful business takes time and effort, but it’s incredibly rewarding to be able to do what I love and make a living from it.

Nequia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a dreadlock stylist, I have a passion for helping people achieve their desired look while maintaining healthy and beautiful locks.
I got into this industry because of my love for hairstyling and my fascination with the art of dreadlocks. I was always drawn to the unique and expressive style of dreadlocks and saw an opportunity to offer my skills to those who were looking for quality dreadlock services.
At my salon suite, I offer a range of services, including dreadlock installation, maintenance, repair, and handmade extensions. I use high-quality products and techniques to ensure that my clients’ locks are healthy, strong, and vibrant. My goal is to provide a personalized experience that meets the specific needs of each client.
What sets me apart from others in the industry is my attention to detail and commitment to excellence. I take the time to understand my clients’ needs and preferences and work with them to achieve their desired look. Additionally, I’m constantly educating myself on new techniques and products to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the positive impact I’ve had on my clients’ lives. I’ve seen the boost in confidence and self-esteem that comes with a great hairstyle, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of that transformation.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that I’m passionate about what I do, and I’m dedicated to providing exceptional service and results. I strive to create a comfortable and welcoming environment where clients can feel confident and relaxed. I’m excited to continue growing my business and helping more people maintain healthy and beautiful locks.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
From my perspective as a dreadlock stylist and artist, I believe that society can best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem by creating more opportunities for collaboration and community-building. Often, the creative process can be a solitary one, and it can be difficult for artists and creatives to find support and inspiration. By providing more opportunities for artists to connect with one another, share ideas, and collaborate on projects, society can help to create a more vibrant and supportive creative ecosystem.
Additionally, it’s important for society to recognize the importance of art education and provide access to resources and training for aspiring artists and creatives. By investing in art education, society can help to cultivate a new generation of artists and creatives, and provide them with the tools and resources they need to succeed.
Lastly, I believe that society can best support artists and creatives by valuing and compensating their work fairly. This means paying artists and creatives what they are worth and recognizing the value that they bring to our culture and society. By doing so, society can help to create a more sustainable career path for artists and creatives, and ensure that they are able to continue creating and contributing to the growth of the creative ecosystem.
In summary, I believe that by creating more opportunities for collaboration and community-building, investing in art education, and valuing and compensating the work of artists and creatives fairly, society can best support a thriving creative ecosystem.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
As a dreadlock stylist and artist, I think that NFTs represent a fascinating opportunity for artists to showcase and monetize their digital work in a unique way. It’s exciting to see the intersection of technology and art and the potential for artists to reach a wider audience through the use of NFTs.
At the same time, there are valid concerns around the environmental impact of NFTs, and it’s important for artists and platforms to take steps to minimize this impact. Additionally, there are questions about the long-term viability of NFTs and how they will fit into the broader art market.
Ultimately, I think that NFTs have the potential to be a valuable tool for artists and creatives, but it’s important to approach them with caution and careful consideration. By balancing the benefits and potential drawbacks of NFTs, artists can make informed decisions about whether or not to utilize them as part of their creative practice.
