We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Super Beezy 64 a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Super Beezy 64, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Often times my music is seen as “Meme Rap.” While people who discover me, and the algorithms of music streaming platforms categorize me this way, this is far from the truth. In reality, I take my art very seriously. I like to include pop culture, video game, movie, and anime references in my songs. I like to bring a comedic tone to a lot of my songs, because that is who I am. I have fun with the creative process, and I am not afraid to be my full self in front of a microphone. While I might crack jokes in my music, my music itself is not a joke. It is disheartening to see my songs grouped with low-effort joke songs by these platforms.

Super Beezy 64, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started making music as young as 13. Back then I would just toy around in FL Studio, and have fun writing funny songs and recording them. After over a decade of making music, not much has changed. I’ve never been a fan of being too commercial to the point one changes who they are for the sake of some extra likes and clicks. I let every bit of my personality seep into the music I create. Even the embarrassing stuff. Especially the embarrassing stuff. After all, if I’m not having fun making art, why am I even doing it?
I’m proud of who I am, and what I have to offer, so there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t try to steadily improve in my craft.

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I personally hate NFT’s. As an artist, not only do NFT’s thrive on the stolen art of others, but art is about creation, love, and passion, all of which are lacking in an NFT. Commercialism and art are not a good mix. I think they are just a fad, and time has shown the immense drop in popularity with NFT’s.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that I have full control of how I shape myself, and who I become. I am no longer myself, but I am Super Beezy 64. I get to be whoever or whatever I want, and express that through my art. My reality is my choice. I feel more free than I have ever been.
