We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vince Ashton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Vince, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most recent project is definitely the most meaningful thus far because it was a testament of overcoming fear. I have released the singles at one time that I’ve had circled the SoundCloud space for sometime. And despite being an artist for years, been able to tour, create a name, received a multitude of streams and so much more… I was nervous to release my art on streaming platforms.
Growing up, living in and having an abundance of talented friends in Atlanta… I allowed intimidation to conquer my own dreams. In that intimidation I supported everyone around me to the fullest and was content in being an under dog or second stream when it came to my music.
Well, last year I just had enough of placing limitation around myself, voice, gifting and calling. So I buckled down, gave those songs some new life, energy, art work, stepped out on faith and made it happen!
Vince, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Vince Ashton, native to Atlanta, Georgia and I love all genres of music…However, R&B/Soul is definitely my element. I believe in making sure my art compels and captures listeners in a way that they feel every ounce of what I’m wanting the songs to convey. Whether its about love, life, faith, doubt, sadness or motivation… I’m that artist that’s going to give it to you all and make sure that it has an impact!
I have been blessed to open for many great artists such as Monica, Sammie, Q.Parker, Karen Clark-Sheard, Canton Jones and have provided background vocals for Gospel/Christian greats such as Tremaine Hawkins, Hillsong UNITED, Donald Lawrence and Bethel Music. However one of my most proudest moments is opening up for former First Lady, Michelle Obama.
Even as a host I’ve emceed many events from Battle of Bands, Susan G. Komen “Race for the Care”, TEDx Vancouver, appeared on the OWN & OXYGEN TV Networks a host of red carpet events, and panels. Another huge accomplishment was when I appeared on international TV “The Great Chocolate Showdown” Season 3 on The Food Network-Canada & THE CW as a contestant/personality.
Many people call me A Renaissance Man… And I wear that badge proudly.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn is that your close family/friends will always support you. Because for some odd reason that particular group of people are sometimes selective as to what they’d like rally around you for. Listen, I am extremely appreciative for any support that’s received because there’s a willingness that people sacrifice to believe and follow your dream. However, with the frequency of events and project one releases, I’ve personally noticed who’s around when it matters the most.
But at the end of the day…What God has for you is for you and my own passion exceeds to lack of support from others.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is IMPACT. When you have a people that go out of there way to not only support and purchase your product. But find appreciation for it and communicate that their life, day or perspective has been changed and impacted in a great way… That means the MOST!
