We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eddie Escalante. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eddie below.
Alright, Eddie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I am definitely doing alot of things very different from others and industry standards. I truly believe what works for you might not work for others, so its very important to try many strategies, learn what fails and move on to the next! Being original is important, taking inspiration and influence is great too!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am artist that doesnt like to conform to any patterns of this world. My music is authentic and has its own sound. Alot of urban latin music sounds the same to me vocally. Its evolving musically but i would like to see a different twist here and there. I love instruments and the implementation of using it still in todays music. I play guitar, sing and write. I just learned to produce on FL Studio and engineer on protools, my latest addition to my repertoire of bags n tricks. Im like a spanish john mayer but with a twist of tainy and rauw alejandro. Im bringing latin pop, musica tropical y rock en español a la mesa asap. rapido pero con calma cuz its gonna take awhile. it’ll be worth it
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I learned alot of bad habits and letting alot of people talk in my ear on how to do things. Its good to listen, dissect and apply what aligns with you and your goals. But sometimes being loyal to the wrong person can kill alot of opportunities. Be loyal to yourself. Be loyal to who you are. And everything else will follow. Whats for you, will be yours truly
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
Well in this situation, i was couch surfing at this studio i was working at and i met a friend that made music for tv. His tv plug would ask him for certain vibes and genres that fit for American tv and film. Me being latino, making spanish music and always trying to spread latin love in American culture, i wanted to create an ep of 10 spanish records to pitch to them and sell. It took about 3 slow months tediously working on it in between sessions. I had my mentor try to discourage, (since he thought selling your masters is not good at all period) other of his followers and disciples that agreed also. But i wasnt making any real money as an artist yet and nobody was paying my bills. My producer friend was down but wasnt sure if his tv plug would accepted it fully spanish. So i added english n spanglish so it could be audibly consumable and easy to understand for non spanish speakers/ listeners Separating from the studio and partnership i had with them, they thought they owned all the records but i had accumulated hrs to record music that was exchanged for service and maintaining studio. Long story short, i sold the ep. It got accepted. Made money upfront, collect my royalty checks and my music to this day can still be heard on tv. On popular tv shows that are on ZEUS Channel, HBO, netflix and countless more.
