We recently connected with Simone Barlow and have shared our conversation below.
Simone, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I remember when I was young girl going to school I was always excited to go to Art class! My little heart would always skip a beat knowing that I had a place in school where I can express myself to the fullest. It was just something about being hands on & letting my imagination run wild! Not to mention my school projects. Oh! The school projects!? All of my school projects were TOP TIER! With the help of my creative parents & a dash of my personality one thing that I knew for sure was that I would ace my projects with no problem! I’ve built a Teepee, a 3D solar system, a female robot, a 3D Book Report amongst other great projects. So my creative drive has always been within me for as long as I can remember.

Simone, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well for those of you that don’t know… I am Simone Barlow. I go under the alias “Lamina”. I’m a painter, a fashion designer, I create logos & I’m a self-published author. My work/services I offer are: Illustrations, portraits, embellished custom clothing, custom quality logos & my memoir “333257: a Memoir”. What sets me apart from others is I stay true & authentic to my craft. I’m raw & unapologetically me. I can’t help but express & display that in my art.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Yes! So, I’m a girl that absolutely loves interviews & reading right now in my life. With that being said, a book that I’m reading currently reading is “The Laws of Human Nature” by Robert Greene (shoutout to my Roy for the recommendation) As far as I interviews, I love watching interviews of Nipsey Hussle. I remember watching one of his earliest documentaries & watching him elevate into a business man & giving back to his community. It inspired me to take my talents a little more seriously & go beyond just the art aspect. My aunt Lydia & cousin Maria have also significantly impacted my thinking! I’ve spent a month in Atlanta learning & unlearning skills for the betterment of myself & my craft. Starting with the basics of business. Business plans, Marketing, Spreadsheets & Logistics of running a business. Having 2 successful women teaching me A million dollars’ worth of gems out of genuine love is priceless & I appreciate them immensely for that. I also love watching Dreka Gates on YouTube. To see her coming from a medical background to managing, being her husband’s booking agent to running her own business all while being a wife & a mother pushes me to continue to being a woman of many talents & wears many hats.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me would have to be, knowing that what I put out in the world is here to stay for generations to come. When I released my book my initial thoughts were: “ when I hit publish, it’s gonna be out there for the world to see” but in the flip side of that another thought I had was “when I leave this world my work will be left behind for my children & for others to see & celebrate”
