We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lakeisha Weeks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lakeisha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
When I was in the 6th grade, we were introduced to different occupations and I decided the role that fit me best was nursing. I’ve always enjoyed caring for others and the salary was decent compared to most. It was until I reached my twenties that I decided to actually pursue my nursing career and I did it in small steps because I was already a mother of three. My very first job as a nurse was at a hospital and I did enjoy it but I wanted more.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
After bedside nursing, I decided that I preferred particular roles in certain departments. It was then that I decided to go back to school to enter the area I wanted to be in. I did that. And ultimately decided to work for myself for several reasons. I can make my own schedule, be my own boss and choose the type of patients I wanted to work with. My clinic offers annual physicals for adults and children for work and/or school. What sets me apart is that we solely provide these physicals. That reduces wait times at you regular physicians office. I am most proud because this business was started and owned by me. An accomplishment by very few.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Yes I would still choose nursing. It has been very rewarding. Yes I would still choose “family” as the specialty because it is very broad in what you can do and where you can go

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That not everyone will support you or congratulate you. You be proud of you. We expect those things from friends and family members; however, when they are not secure in themselves or what they are doing you can get the cold shoulder or the many questions about why you are doing what you are doing. It’s kind of sad that sometimes you can only count on yourself.
