We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Snigdha Mall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Snigdha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I had the idea for my business for quite some time. Though I did not pursue it then, I always wanted it, and I did it. I had always seen my father and grandmother make fine art pieces; I wanted to be like my father.
I started my journey toward my art business after I got married and moved to the States. Being an immigrant and on a dependent visa is another challenge. I could not work and had to wait for my work visa to be approved before I could pursue my dreams which took almost 5 years—these long years required a lot of patience, positivity, and waiting.
I started doing some online courses before 2021, but in 2021 I joined Mastery Program at Milan Art Institute, which changed my life. I learned different techniques and how to improve my skills, start my business, and a road to success.
In July 2022, I got my work visa, and I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. I started applying to art fairs which, to my surprise, were filled at the start of every year. Now, I have to wait again for a couple of months.
During these, I started going to local markets, applying to local shows setting up my business, meeting new people, and understanding what one wants. I know I am on the right track, but it is still a long way to go, and it is still exciting.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born and brought up in Gorakhpur – India. The city is known for its traditional values and spirituality. From childhood, I had seen my father and grandmother making some fine pieces of art and was keen on getting into it but never got a chance to explore it in the chaos of growing up.
I am a trained classical Kathak Dancer. After marrying, I relocated to the US and started connecting to art. Traveling to various cities gave me new perspectives and imagination of different dimensions. I began exploring my colorful side. The hobby turned my quest into a passion, leading me to pursue the “Mastery Program at Milan Art Institute.” The Mastery program changed my life and gave me the confidence and knowledge to start my own business.
I am an ABSTRACT REPRESENTATIONAL ARTIST specializing in oil painting & mixed media. I love to create my sources and let the colors guide me to express myself. My work is about looking deep and discovering your true self. I want to evoke the feeling of purity, happiness, and innocence.
I paint with vibrant colors with an abstract background. They have a translucent effect that connects with you. I paint in many different layers. I start with graphite, charcoal, and water-soluble materials & let them dry. Then add more layers with acrylics, inks, & spray paint, finally finishing with oils. All along the way, I leave my layers showing from the beginning.
My paintings have a deep meaning that connects people on a deeper level. They bring tranquility to my viewers’ hearts and kindle their imaginations.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
CAN I DO IT? The one question that comes to every one of us. When I started painting, I was unsure how it would pan out. I started with acrylic paintings, taking beginner online classes, and then worked on improving myself. People liked my paintings and gave me positive feedback, which gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams. My husband supported me financially, which was a huge help. I would not be here without my husband’s and my family’s support. In 2020, I started a Mastery program at Milan Art Institute, which gave me the knowledge and confidence to start my art business. Currently, I have an art business, “Arts By Snigdha.”

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The more I meet people and connect through art fairs and local markets, the more I understand how people connect with my artwork. I believe in the personal touch. When I meet with people, they get to know me and my paintings. They see what I see when I paint. They connect with my paintings on a deeper level.
