Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Gonzalez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
John, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I use to do personal training at regular gyms. I noticed a lot of time we would have yo wait for machines or equipment because they would occupied. That would be an inconvenience especially if you were on a tight training schedule.
One day I thought to myself wouldn’t it be great if i can create a space where all we did was personal training in a private setting without the distractions of traditional crowded impersonal gyms. That’s when i decided go open up a private training studio.

John, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is John Gonzalez and I am a fitness entrepreneur. I own and operate a small personal training in NYC in the Bronx. We offer private 1on1, semi private and small group training sessions.
The problem we try to solve and what sets us apart from others is that we are an alternative to the often overcrowded impersonal health clubs. The goal is to provide a private training atmosphere for all of our clients without any walk in traffic, where all sessions are by appt and schedule only. We specialize in general fitness, weight loss and sports performance training.
I got into the fitness industry while I was in college. I played on the basketball team and we didn’t have an athletic trainer and very minimal and old workout equipment. After practice myself and my teammates would stay after practice looking for ways to improve our strength. I started coming up with workouts for us to do. I fell in love wit training and knew right there this is what i wanted to do and never looked back.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
At the time when i first wanted to go out on my own, I wasn’t able to secure a small business loan. What i did was keep my day job and put money away and purchased every piece of equipment one at a time saving slowly. We purchased an old house that was a fixer uper, and gutted t he 1000 square foot basement turning it into a personal training studio.
As i mentioned because i could not get the small business loan initially i wasn’t able to get a storefront location or even purchase needed exercise equipment. This is when I opted to take the basement and fix it up bit by bit. A great friend of mine is a contractor and he told me he would help me fix everything up and turn it into a nice looking training gym.
This process took over 2 years before I was able to open up. There was definitely discouragement along the way but i never gave up. I worked 2 jobs saving to purchase equipment, buy material and pay the contractor. It was a long lonely stressful journey but well worth it. I wouldn’t change it for anything because now I appreciate where im at and will never forget all of the hard work it took to get here.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
In my type of business the best strategy for gowing my clientele has been providing results and a great experience. You want to over deliver and make each client feel like they are not just a gym member but that you as their trainer are on a journey with them every step of the way as they work hard to achieve whatever their fitness goals may be.
Believe it or not i don’t do any paid advertising at all and am always booked solid. Most clients are referred word of mouth, the rest are from google search engine or IG. In my opinion providing results and a great customer/client experience and over delivering to your current customers is the best way to grow your clientele. These days people always talk whether good or bad they talk.
