We were lucky to catch up with Brynn & Chase Heckendorn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brynn & Chase thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
When my spouse and I decided to embark on the adventure of running our very own marquee letter rental company, Shout It Dallas, we knew we were in for an exciting ride. As a husband and wife duo, we’ve discovered that the key ingredients for success are communication, respect, and a healthy dose of humor.
Shout It Dallas isn’t just a business to us; it’s a creative outlet for our entire family. We love brainstorming new ideas and designs together, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the joy our letters bring to our clients’ events. Our three boys are also an essential part of our journey. They’ve learned valuable life lessons by witnessing their parents work together, grow a business, and navigate the world of entrepreneurship.
Balancing the demands of a thriving business and raising three energetic boys in elementary school can be challenging, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. Our kids remind us of what’s truly important and inspire us to approach our work with the same enthusiasm and curiosity that they bring to their daily lives.
Running a family business like Shout It Dallas has given us the flexibility to be present for our children’s milestones and has allowed us to forge deeper connections with our clients through shared values. We cherish the unique opportunities and challenges that come with running a business together, and we feel incredibly fortunate to be able to create magic together, both at work and at home.
As we continue on this amazing journey, hand in hand, we remain grateful for the chance to blend our passion for creating unforgettable events with our commitment to family. If there’s one piece of advice we’d give to other aspiring family businesses, it’s this: cherish the moments, embrace the chaos, and let your love and passion guide the way.
Brynn & Chase, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My husband and I bring a dynamic combination of skills and experience to Shout It Dallas. Prior to starting our marquee letter rental business, I had been immersed in the event industry for over 15 years, most recently running a successful event venue. My in-depth knowledge of event planning and management has been an invaluable asset to our business, allowing us to anticipate and cater to the unique needs of our clients.
My husband has always had an entrepreneurial spirit and has started several businesses over the years. This background has provided us with the expertise needed to effectively strategize, market, and grow our family business. Our combined talents have been the driving force behind the success of Shout It Dallas, and we’re incredibly proud of the strong foundation we’ve built together.
By merging my industry experience with his entrepreneurial know-how, we’ve been able to create a marquee letter rental business that not only provides unforgettable experiences for our clients but also serves as a testament to the power of teamwork and shared passion.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
When my husband and I first started Shout It Dallas, it began as a side hustle while I was still deeply involved in the event industry, running a venue. I always had a passion for creating unforgettable experiences, and our marquee letter rental business seemed like the perfect complement to my existing work.
As we gradually grew our client base and word spread about our unique, personalized marquee letters, the demand for our services increased. It became clear that there was immense potential for Shout It Dallas to thrive as a full-time business. With the support of my husband and our shared passion for the business, I decided to take the leap and focus all my energy on growing our marquee letter rental company.
Transitioning from running the business as a side hustle to dedicating myself to it full time was both exciting and challenging. I had to learn to balance my time between managing a growing business and taking care of our family. However, working from home provided me the flexibility to be present for our children’s milestones and everyday moments while still pursuing my passion for creating memorable events.
As the business continued to flourish, I found that my experience in the event industry was invaluable, allowing me to forge deeper connections with clients and anticipate their needs. My husband’s entrepreneurial expertise also played a crucial role in our success, as he helped strategize, market, and expand our family business.
Looking back on our journey, I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come and grateful for the opportunity to turn our side hustle into a thriving full-time business
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
My husband reads so much on entrepreneurship and here is his reply.
“One book that truly inspired my journey is “Sparked” by Jonathan Fields. This insightful read helped me discover my inner “Maker” and made me realize that I needed to spend more of my time on making and creating, rather than just operating. The book opened my eyes to the importance of aligning my work with my core strengths and passions, which ultimately led to a more fulfilling professional life.
As I embraced my Maker identity, I found that this newfound understanding allowed me to better contribute to our family business. “Sparked” has been a game-changer for me, and I’m grateful for the guidance it provided on my entrepreneurial journey.” – Chase Heckendorn
