We were lucky to catch up with Zyan Hightower recently and have shared our conversation below.
Zyan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Everything started with just an Idea at a young age, I was maybe 13-14 when I first started getting into fashion heavy! younger than that I was still into different styles and creating a style of my own, so clothing/fashion played a big part of my life. In the process of growing up I created countless amounts of different pieces like jean jackets, denim jeans , tye-die hoodies, hats & scarfs you name it I was already making it all! not anything that was branded just pieces with particular details created from my creativity & after growing up and finally graduating highschool I then came up with the name BadTendencyClothing! The name BadTendencyClothing was so unique to me because it described not only something that I go through but everyone in life we all have Bad Tendencies! Not only do I express and show the things I suffered from inside of my designs, every design means something they all resemble particular moments that created art! the things the I go through and been through are mutual in some ways that people can understand so everything that I create I want the consumer to see ,understand & know the art. I put my all into this vision it’s not just a clothing line Bad Tendency is a Lifestyle, a True Brand! During the process of creating artwork and learning everything I needed to know I than fully invested into myself and got everything I needed to see my vision all the way through! I had a few people that helped me along the way, My mom being number she is my biggest support system since the beginning it’ll never get better than her she is the one I strive to impress the most! but I also lost my lil brother he passed away & he was apart of Bad Tendency he wanted it more than me and after losing him I knew I had to make this dream happen I couldn’t take no for a answer for nothing I have to make it happen.
Zyan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got to where i’m at by simply just being myself! I never had a role model or looked up to be like someone one day I always wanted to be a greater version of the pure me who I really am, with that being said I always wanted to be a clothing designer since I was a kid that has been my dream I stayed true to this dream for over 20+years it’s not something that I seen others do and wanted to try it always been my dream career. When it comes to clothing I getting to a point where I do it all! Everything under BadTendencyClothing is done by one person the creator, I learned everything inside and out on how to create clothing I then learned from mistakes by trying everyday and not giving up. Spending countless amount of money losing more than i’m making , going back to zero times on times & years of work going unnoticed. It took all of that for me to realize that I was going be bigger than they knew, it was only so much I could say I had to lock myself in the Lab and create art daily to unlock my full potentials and without all of the trail and error I wouldn’t be as ahead as I am today
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
the first time I fully invested in myself was around year 2020 when stimulus checks was going around, instead of spending mine in stores on other things I invested every dollar of it into my business and got everything I needed to create clothing. I would have done it eventually because I was saving money from side hustle and services I had growing up as an entrepreneur and it was around the same time the stimulus came out so it worked perfect for me I had double the money to invest with a plan!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
consistent content and being different with every outcome! change is necessary, it’s needed to be able to stay in the loop. style constantly changes so you don’t want to get stuck on something that’s not the style or not of style. staying relevant is a must with any business.
