We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful SL Redd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with SL below.
SL, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Maybe I’m crazy, but I find risk-tasking compelling and exciting. I believe you have to be open to taking risk if you want to run any kind of business….everything in the building process is taking a risk. Including the team you build, the product/services you offer, the partnerships you establish, etc. I’d have to say the biggest risk I have taken has been relocating from the East to West Coast. My label, #MIHUSTLEENT, has established it’s reputation amongst the Detroit underground scene. Moving would mean less live performances at the home base….very risky for an already small operation. I accepted the challenge, however. My response was to increase social media presence and engagement with my audience. I added content to the MIHUSTLEENT.com website, including links, featured articles, merchandise access and announcements so that distant followers could stay connected. As a result, engagement has almost doubled since my relocation. One thing to remember with risk, is if you plan for it and/or adapt to it…..it could result in great reward.
SL, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is SLRedd, I am owner of entertainment company MI HUSTLE ENTERTAINMENT LLC (aka MIHUSTLEENT). MIHUSTLEENT was established in Detroit, MI in mid-2015. We are mostly known for our crowd-engaging performances, distinctive Youtube content, polarizing music and as of 2023…..our trend-setting merchandise. MIHUSTLEENT was built on the premise of making something out of now and making our way through the music industry on our own terms. I am super proud of the overall progress and transformations we have made. Since we have been established, we have grown exceptionally amongst the underground listening community which has led to building some beneficial partnerships and connections.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source for new listeners has been Spotify and Instagram. I believe recent performances and concentrated playlisting has contributed to an increase in music streams and profile visits. Listeners are intrigued when they see or hear my releases, This is where trusting your data analytics comes in handy. Once I began to understand where my listeners where coming from, I focused on strategies for those approaches. Understanding that the journey could start with a Shazaam at one my performances or a popular hip-hop/rap Spotify playlist. From there, I want them to get lost in a world of entertaining content and merchandise. Each link leads to videos, our website, social media, articles and more from MIHUSTLEENT.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy has been engagement. I am approachable at my performances and on my social media, so I often meet new fans and fellow musicians. Also, using promotional material on and offline has contributed. Online, my audience see’s sponsored ad’s to promote new releases and items from the MIHUSTLEENT online store. Offline, I am passing out flyer’s with QR codes to music and the online store. Out of the two, offline is the most enjoyable. Nothing like the chance to make a fan out of someone face to face.
