We recently connected with Christina Dang and have shared our conversation below.
Christina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
This wacky idea of boba catering started back in 2018 when I had the honor of setting up a boba bar for my girlfriend, Kimy, at her bridal shower. She had these amazing engagement photos from Iceland that I knew needed the spotlight. Since she doesn’t drink alcohol, I thought a boba station would be a fun experience for her and her guests. In 2019, we catered boba for 500+ guests at her wedding, which was so exciting and scary. I’m not sure why I didn’t continue to pursue boba catering at that time but am grateful that the opportunity to start this business came back around. In 2021, a few of those wedding guests were getting married and reached out to have boba catered at their weddings. I made it “Instagram Official” and am now in my second year of boba catering in Houston!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My family is composed of many small business owners and I’ve always knows that I wanted to start my own small business, but wasn’t sure how and when. We opened Pho 54 a few years ago and I started making different drinks for the menu. I was helping to plan a bridal shower for my girlfriend, Kimy. She and her fiancé returned from Iceland with Pink Posh Photography and we created a build your own boba station to highlight the dreamiest engagement photos. We then planned for a large boba catering station for her 500+ person wedding, which was so fun. After catering smaller parties for friends and families, I started getting catering opportunities from friends of friends and here we are today! Although the larger wedding and corporate events are really fun, I love the smaller more intimate events with small setups to make it more DIY-friendly. I think what sets Boba Babes HTX a little apart from others is the customization of the menus/cups as well as the drinks. Although we have a “set” menu, I get special requests from clients to experiment with different fruits and teas to create some beautiful colors and flavors. I am most proud of my team – Jackie, Omar and Kasey – for putting up with my wacky ideas and am so lucky to have their help and support.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth has been the best source of finding new clients and befriending new vendors. I love seeing and meeting all of these incredible small business owners, who are all pursuing their passion. It brings me such joy to work together to create these milestone events with our clients. It is a huge honor for me to be a part of these celebrations – no matter how big or small.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Growing up in a small business family, I’ve learned how to adapt and work with many different personalities. I try to be as patient and accommodating as possible and I’m sure other small businesses can attest to, you don’t always get the same in return. I’ve had clients email that we were highly recommended by their friends and family and that is the best “strategy” and biggest compliment that we can receive. As long as I can make the ordering process as simple as possible and be flexible to the clients’ customization requests, I hope to continue celebrating and sharing boba with as many people as we can!
