Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Helena Urban. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Helena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
A lot of people think modeling is not a real career, that it’s easy to just sit there and get your picture taken. We as models are constantly being judged, critiqued and picked apart by the way we look. This career is not for everyone, and not everyone is willing to put in the work to be good at this. The countless hours practicing posing in the mirror, investing thousands of dollars and time into building your portfolio, years of networking and building connections, and having to navigate your personal confidence journey. These are all just a few things that every successful model has gone through in their career. What modeling means to me the most, is being unapologetically true to yourself and exploring that through visual documentation.
Helena, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I pull a lot of my creative freedom and flow from my fine arts background along with knowing how to conduct myself professionally and complete tasks expeditiously through my military training. I feel like I have a good understanding of how things work, problem solving is a strong suite of mine and I’m able to think quick on my feet. Clients who’ve booked me or anyone who’s worked with me knows I try my best to be the best version of me that I can for them. Knowing what needs to be done or seeing those cracks, I have no issue with jumping in and helping where I can even when it’s not my role to play. Every team I’m apart of, I see us better to move as one. That’s where magic is made.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is when I know an audience was really touched or moved by what I’m doing. Even more-so, to know someone felt understood and connected to a stranger. That’s the beauty about art, it’s meant to tell a story or send a message. If that message was understood or recognized; felt in the heart then I know I did my job well.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to change the world through unification. The only way we can accomplish this is if everyone strives to stay (or become) humble, feel empowered, have an open mind about people from all backgrounds and walks of life, and be respectful. It boils down to moving intentionally with love in everything we do. Having traveled and lived in another country, I see even more-so how divided and not empathetic we are of each other. That is extremely important for human connection which is essential for everyone, even though some people don’t have much experience with feeling loved often enough.
