We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jason Poncio. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jason below.
Jason , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
All the projects that I have worked on whether Music or Movies have been meaningful. You get the opportunity to create and bring your vision to life and also grow from each project.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Growing up I listened to 80’s rock and Motown. My inspirations that really help me make my mind up to pursue music was New Kids On The Block and New Edition. I formed my own group in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. With local and regional success we hit growing pains with maturity and outside influences breaking us apart. I decided to go solo a year after the group’ broke up. The solo project had a hit in Japan with U Know I . While promoting the album I created an entertainment group and started managing other acts which consist of rock, rap and dj’s. After awhile I walked away from the grind and took over a decade off. Now coming back I released an album and now a new single with movie and tv projects in the works.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
This business is full of sharks and cut throats. At one point my group and I had this hot song getting cashed on radio stations on the east coast. We had managers at the time put a hit out on me because the record company wanted all the guys except me. But since I was the creator of the group and leader it wasn’t going to go the way they wanted. So the managers tried to have a local gang eliminate me. But all was handled without incident. Greed definitely does something to people that preys on their spirit.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I basically learned the business as I went along. There wasn’t a lot of access to information or social media to reach out and ask questions. It was more trial and error. But as long as you have that burn inside to achieve your dream you can climb any mountain. As far as resources now it’s all at a click of a button which is great for artists coming up.
