We recently connected with Dawn Taylor and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
At a very young age i was a storyteller and that expressed itself by writing, I would have these vivid amazing adventures in my sleep and wanted to share them with others. So, as soon as i could write i knew i was going to be a writer. Expressing myself as a visual artist came much later.
Dawn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As soon as I graduated from high school and joined the Army and served my country for ten years. After Operation Desert Storm, i left my military service honorably after serving for 10 years. I returned to New York and began writing and submitting to any publishing house i could find. I received a particularly in-depth critique which let me know i need to hone my writing skills, I worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs at the time and would write when I could. I found it helpful to sketch and such when my characters would not step to my mental microphone. Once i moved south to North Carolina, i was able to secure a studio where i could write and paint. The visual art grew to what it is now.
I have a beautiful space downtown Durham where i exhibit my art and write my stories.
I provide original works of art for my clients. Durham is blossoming and with all the new homes and spaces people are looking to fill their spaces with one-of-a-kind pieces.
i am most proud of my work because it is unique, bold, and mesmerizing.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being a professional creative. I mean, most people never get to live their passion. I get to wake up every day and do what i am passionate about. How wonderful is that.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Yes, i think non creatives think art is done in a flash! When they come into the studio and ask why they a piece is priced the way it is and i explain the process they will admit they had no idea what went into making that particular piece. it can take several days or weeks to make an original piece.
