We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jennifer Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennifer below.
Jennifer, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In business (and creative and scientific pursuits), we often think about decisions as being a destination: the finish line of a decision making process which is high-stakes, stressful, and destined to determine the outcomes of our pursuits or careers. In truth, decisions are a starting line and building the right culture within your organization will help you make the most of your strategies, flexible with the details, staying true to your purpose.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am an experienced c-suite executive who has helped technology companies, large and small, achieve their potential. I have led marketing, brand, communications, operations, innovation, and strategy functions. My superpower is to see around strategic corners and rally others toward positive change. My book, Well Made Decisions, showcases many stories and examples that illustrate concepts of how to not only make right decisions, but more importantly, how to make decisions right. I am proud of my family and community and strive to pour into others the way others have poured into me.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn Powerpoint! When I went to Amazon Web Services I learned the finer points of the working backwards process and specifically about the benefits of writing out strategy and have since applied in other several other contexts.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
First-hand knowledge of customers is critical for anyone who strives to serve them well. You can not accept proxies or second-hand information and expect the insights necessary to differentiate your business. I have used a variety of techniques in my career, from formal focus groups, surveys, message testing, brand awareness, and affinity studies, win/loss analysis, and textual analysis to arrive at insights. I have also made opportunities for customers to be more visible to the organization through customer Q&A sessions, call center ride-alongs, and more.
