Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shelton Wilder. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shelton, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Every year around the holidays, I through a large client appreciation party called Wilder Winter Wonderland. It’s at a day camp in Brentwood that we rent out. We bring real snow in and set up a tubing hill, there’s face painting, balloon animals, and an inflatable obstacle course for the kids, and a variety of food vendors. This year, about 350 people came and we went through 900 slices of pizza! There is no marketing material at this party, it is purely a thank you for my clients.
Shelton, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Before I had my Real Estate Business, I had a styling business. One day, I just got the click to do Real Estate, so I got my license and started my Real Estate business. Styling and Real Estate are both so similar because you work with people in really intimate ways. I love working with people and I really love Real Estate because I am passionate about helping people achieve lifelong goals and find a perfect home! It is such an overwhelming process emotionally, financially, and organizationally. It is so rewarding to make a difficult process enjoyable and stress-free for my clients. I do this by staying in constant communication with my clients so they feel taken care of – even after the transaction closes! I never stop communicating with my clients! One of her biggest successes has been my networking and research skills, which helps me find hidden, ‘off-market’ listings and matching my buyers with the perfect homes and lifestyles to fit their needs. I also help sellers maximize their homes’ aesthetic value through my creativity and penchant for organization. I love to give and I give everything to my clients – I give all my time – I’m available 24/7, I love giving thoughtful and personal closing gifts, yearly “Homeaversary” gifts, and I give back part of the commission to a charity of the client’s choice. I think it must be my Southern roots and charm! I’m so proud of the agent I am today – after only 6 years in the industry. I was named in LA Business Journal’s 2023 Top 100 Agent’s in LA, I have put together a team that is like a big family, and I have established incredible relationships with other agents. I’m also very proud of my character and how I run my business with ethics and integrity.
Any advice for managing a team?
As the oldest of 5, I know what it means to rule the roost. Having a positive team dynamic is important to me and I do my best to be approachable and enthusiastic. We work hard and we play hard. Every Monday morning, we all come together for a team meeting. We each go over peaks and pits from the prior week and can offer suggestions to one another. I think this time is really valuable because we’re all there to help each other accomplish our personal goals and of course, the team’s goal. I look forward to Monday morning meetings because I don’t get to see everyone together in one place other than this time! I love doing monthly team bonding to maintain high morale and just have some fun! Most recently, we did an escape room and Top Golf. We have such great memories from our team bonding days and we are already planning our next one!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I get a lot of people interested in joining the team and of course I want to help everyone, but it’s so important to me to maintain the family-like relationship and atmosphere we have within out team. In order to do this, I’ve had a lot of success requiring applicants to fill out a DISC personality test and send me their results along with their resume and CV. I use their DISC test results to determine if they are a good fit for our team. I love having a work family, and I know my team feels the same. I think we do our best work when we are all comfortable with each other and get along, so that is the biggest priority for me – maintaining a happy work family!!
