We recently connected with Deferred Dreams and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Deferred, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Dreams are fragile. Especially those deferred for any period of time. So we tackle them sensibly, focusing effort on empowering dreamers in their pursuits. We dig into what existing priorities exist, and how we can best aid artists in achieving their music goals within a day-to-day platform.
The climb is slower, and different, but the goals are the same. It’s holistic in that it is custom to each individual and strives to balance dreams and life. And without a sense of sacrifice or any stifling, DDreams respects the unique design of every artist and every climb. We prove independent artists can still create music with a family, full-time job, and life’s responsibilities.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Remember the opening scene in the movie Pretty Woman? There’s a gentleman walking the streets, welcoming people to Hollywood, while proclaiming everyone’s got a dream. DDreams are those people. The dreamers living one life to pay bills and the other to be fulfilled on a deeper level. The trio are weaved together by a common thread: Commercial real estate professionals by day, and music moguls in the making every minute in between. The hustle is real. But without the hard work, dreams are just deferred.
Danah grew up in music. Her first love and biggest passion is music. She spent years studying and traveling the country working with amazing musicians and artists toward that goal. Several years ago, a crossroad forced her into Corporate America.
But that crossroad proved only to be a path to fellow Dreamer, Trena. Trena shared an office with Danah within a commercial real estate company located in Atlanta and was an aspiring writer. Trena and Danah connected through the disclosure of a real dream during the downtime of COVID-19, which turned into writing and recording music.
Rewind back several more years to another real estate company where Trena bonded and became friends with Culver over a Tupac song. Culver had just taken the leap from commercial real estate to chase her passion to write full-time at the same time the DDreams vision was coming to life. The perfect timing, love of music, passion for writing, and hunger to create, bonded the three firmly into Deferred Dreams, LLC (DDreams).
We are most proud of getting out there and being doers within the realm of dreamers (#dreamersanddoers). It’s not easy to find motivation after a long day of work and juggling family obligations. We aim to be everyday proof that if you want something, you make it happen. Our platform chooses both passion and balance. We grant those who work with us the opportunity to feel like they can have it all.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Creatives can see promise and beauty in the most unlikely places. Sometimes it contradicts accepted principles on how life is to be successfully led and lived, which is something the non-creative does not always understand. Creatives seek fun in the most redundant project. Creatives see paths in tight spaces. Creatives can take a good project and make it great. To embrace and empower a creative for who they are unlocks a secret magic that has the potential to enhance any environment.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Letting go of corporate-minded, left centric thinking, and golden handcuffs to embrace your creative side, is exponentially harder than one thinks. Add in opinions and side-eyes of those who only know how to support anyone in an 8-5 life. Then multiply that by the fact that you have succeeded in your corporate career, provided a stable environment, and are well beyond your 20’s. That is the base level external noise that plagues most creatives and leads one to defer their dreams.
“Leap and the net will appear” isn’t a mindset we were raised to believe. Our upbringing taught us to follow the path to the almighty green. Provide for ourselves, and build a secure future. All sage advice; but if your soul is empty there is no amount of money that can fill the void creatives feel in playing it “safe”.
We are constantly reminding ourselves to silence the noise, never mind the naysayers, push beyond our comfy zones, and that we are not crazy! (At least not in a bad way)!
