We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexandre Orr. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexandre below.
Hi Alexandre, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
Listen to my mother and father more. If I learned more about apparel manufacturing earlier I would have saved a lot of money. Understanding fabric yields, sample making costs, and wholesale pricing, and the other aspects of the business of fashion would have helped me. Also, understanding myself and the type of fashion house I wanted to establish would have helped a lot.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started my own fashion house eponymously to create fashion and visuals that allow me to express myself and encourage people to make and share stories things that they wear. I create fashion experiences through clothing and visuals. I don’t solve any problems. I try to inspire people to experience what they like and not be afraid to try new things so they can have stories to tell. I think what sets me apart is I am growing alongside the members of my fashion house. The highs and the lows are all transparent.
I am most proud of the Flash Mob Runway show we put on. Bringing together such an amazing group of people to perform such a stunt was incredible. I was able to meet so many people. I can’t thank the people who helped bring this idea to life enough seriously. I want people to know that when they purchase a garment or work with my fashion house, they are becoming members of a group of likeminded individuals that care and genuinely want to see each other grow. I also want them to know that the color purple is my favorite color.
ALEXANDRE’s core philosophy and mission as a fashion house is to encourage our members to create memories in the clothing they wear. ALEXANDRE is a character that allows us to tell stories for our members to relate to. The clothing we sell are classic silhouettes that provide a connection for our members to the stories we tell as a house. We also create visuals and performances that can be interpreted by the viewer and relate to the garments we make.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew how to create and manipulate patterns early on. I am still learning how to create them from scratch, but I am able to manipulate them and it helps a lot.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love meeting people. I also love trying things and not having pressure of needing to be an expert or knowing everything. I feel at traditional jobs you do not have the luxury to learn as you go the way artists/creatives do.
