Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amelia Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amelia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
In early 2021 While undertaking virtual classes at Parsons School of Design, my grandmother taught me how to knit by the pool in the middle of an Australian summer. I took to knitting like a duck to water.
Within weeks, I had knitted an entire collection of sweater vests and knew I would never wear them all in a subtropical summer so I decided to post them to my Instagram to see if they sold. Much to my surprise the first piece sold in under a minute, and thus Amelia Designs was born.
The demand for my one-of-a-kind custom pieces grew quickly, I saw a gap in the market for sustainable pieces that were both well-constructed and unique. The rise of Amelia Designs came during a knitwear boom at a time when I believe people were fatigued from seeing the same pieces and designs everywhere, consumers wanted something original and distinctive. I designed, knitted, marketed, packed, and posted each order by hand.
In the first year of business, my designs were featured in Marie Claire and Vogue magazines as well as collaborating with the US womenswear brand LoveShackFancy.
Amelia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Amelia Scott and I am an Australian Fashion Designer living in New York City. My business, Amelia Designs began unintentionally during the pandemic with chunky hand-knitted vests and sweaters. Today Amelia Designs garments are designed and sewn by hand in New York City’s Garment District.
Amelia Designs pieces are designed to be forever pieces in one’s wardrobe, at 22 I am still raiding my mother’s and grandmother’s wardrobes to find vintage pieces and it is my hope that Amelia Designs garments will be passed down to future generations.
Many brands today (especially fast fashion) overlook the fit and construction of their garments, a key characteristic that sets Amelia Designs apart is perfecting the fit and construction of our garments not to mention using sustainable fabrics and working on a pre-order basis to minimize textile and overproduction waste.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My dance concert at age three was held at a local catholic high school in my hometown and when I was dancing there (at age three) I decided and told my mother that this was the high school I was going to attend. Unfortunately, my application was rejected each year because I was not a Roman Catholic and the school gives priority to students of that particular faith. Nevertheless, I personally contacted the school each year from Year 4 to Year 11 and begged them to accept me. I must have worn down the people in the admissions office because I was accepted to complete my final year of high school (Year 12) at that particular school.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I keep in touch with my clients and customers on social media, through Instagram and Tiktok. I love sharing sneak peeks of upcoming pieces and collections however what I love to share most is the behind-the-scenes content. Consumers love to see how the business works, where you source your fabric from, how many samples were made to get to the final garment, and the hurdles encountered along the way. I think when you own your process and show up authentically people feel a connection to the brand and you build a community along the way too.
