Alright, Lucy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Throughout my career I’ve been blessed to have been able to tap into my passions which are beauty & fashion. In 2015 I was knee deep into my spiritual journey and looking for ways to be of service to others. One day I was sipping my favorite Yogi Green Tea and reading the life affirmation message on the tag. It was such a sweet message that I thought how great would it be if more products had positive messages for their customers (especially beauty products) . That is when the idea formed of merging my passion of beauty with service. This is when Self Love Cosmetics was born. It later launched in 2017.
Focus number one was to provide the best e-commerce customer experience filled with self love affirmations. When customers receive their order, they are greeted by beautiful Eco-friendly packaging that is filled with feel good affirmations. Each order has different messages. My favorite message says “Be your own kind of beautiful”. It makes me so happy when my customers send me messages saying how a simple self love message made their day brighter.
On another note, I analyzed the market and to see what other beauty brands are doing to make the world a little better. For the most part I only saw small campaigns here and there. This came as a shock coming from multi-million to billion dollar brands who can afford to do better. So I decided I would start my humble little brand to support various social causes and strive to empower people and bring awareness to issues around the world. I would provide my customers the power with their purchase decision.
The other part of this analysis was the amount of investment from these beauty brands of paying influencers to provide biased reviews of their products. I saw this and said to myself how can my company be different? Going against the grain has always been part of my life path so I figured why not be the rebel of beauty. While the world shows you superficial trends, Self Love Cosmetics promotes keeping it real and marching at the beat of your own drum. I don’t compare my brand with no one else’s and stay true to the company’s values. Self love, uplifting your customers and transforming lives through charity.

I became a makeup artist at the tender age of 17 for a reputable beauty brand. I later went off to college to pursue a career in fashion. Throughout my fashion career I’ve simultaneously kept working on my artistry independently and staying up to date with beauty’s ever changing market. After becoming a mom, I decided to start my own beauty brand with the focus of empowering people, aligning with various social causes and spreading the message of love. I feel so proud to lead a beauty brand that has heart and soul that is relatable and inclusive.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
My best advice is start off small. Pick a product category and work on it until it you are able to scale up. At the beginning I wanted to service all areas of my beauty brand and it took extra work managing each product category. Had I focused on 1-2 product categories, I’d probably would have not felt overwhelmed the first year or two of my company.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Self Love Cosmetics initially was sold exclusively through our main website www.selflovecosmetics.com. During Covid lock downs I had to expand my sales channels to include Facebook Market, Google Market, Instagram and Ebay platforms.
