We recently connected with T-Shawn and have shared our conversation below.
T-Shawn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
I feel as if it is an artist journey to begin misunderstood. When I took my first steps into music, I only had one person that believed I even had the talent to be successful. My grandmother didn’t want me doing it, my friends secretly joked to each other about me trying it, but I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t stop writing. I’ve discovered that God gives us a path, and guides our steps, it’s up to us to take his guidance. I’ve lost any and everything you could image behind what I know I’m on earth do as an artist, but that’s the beauty of this process; am I willing to be misunderstood for my purpose. Staying home to work on my album cover, missing trips, putting all my money into promotion then uber driving day and night to make it back, These things may not be ideal to some, but to me it was something that separated me from anyone else.
T-Shawn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name Is T-Shawn, I’m from Dallas Texas, byway of Atlanta Georgia and I am a Hip-Hop artist, and a creator of The Tomorrow Foundation Non-Profit.
I began my music career during my Junior year of High-School, began taking it seriously in 2013 (my first year attending University of Houston), and from then on I was in motion to be what I am/still becoming today. I provide a unique blend of up-tempo and melodic songs, as well as introspective interviews, and fresh takes on music from my unique point of view.
I’ve always wonder what makes me different. I tried as many things as I could to not only come up with something different, but try to outwardly be different so at least I could believe that I was. After countless failed attempts however, I discovered what makes me different, are the trials God placed inside of me to overcome, as well as my personality to overshare. In short, I’m different because we all are, and that’s the beautiful thing about the world.
As an artist, I’m most proud of the mass amount of streams I’ve garnered on my own accord. Over 6 Million across all platforms. That took over a decade of handwork. As a man however, I’m most proud of the fact that I am not afraid to stand on what I believe in, and I believe we can change this world, one moment at a time.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew form the beginning that it only takes one person to believe in you, and that’s the man or woman standing in the mirror. I’ve suffered from lack of trust in myself and my craft for years, and the biggest thing that was holding me back was myself.
That may not be a true resource, but belief will make you resourceful.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe families have to support their children and fuel those creative desires when we’re just trying things out as a youth. I can only speak about the black community, but our parents, and grandparents don’t/didn’t believe in us enough. I can only imagine how many dreams that could have changed the trajectory of a families future, died in a 10 year old’s notebook.
