We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Quineitra Shelby a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Quineitra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
My life has always been about risk taking. I moved to Houston on my own when I was 18-19 and I didn’t know anyone there, had no family, but I had a dream. Houston for me was the pre test for everything God is preparing me for now. The move to Houston changed my life so much because I learned how to trust God & figure it out in any circumstance because my parents weren’t 10 minutes away anymore.
Quineitra , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Of course. My name is Quineitra but you guys don’t have to call me that normally I go by Que however, this year I am looking forward to introducing the world to Monèè which is my middle name and (new) artist name. I am a singer/ songwriter and I grew up in a small town called Ocean springs in Mississippi. I also do make up and have pretty much loved make up my entire life. I like to believe I took on music from my family because majority of my family does music but no one in my family does make up or anything so that’s kind of one of my unique talents.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Social media has really been a major factoring in growing my business and music. I love TikTok I believe TikTok opens up a lot of doors especially for creators like myself. It’s a whole new vibe to social media and I would say to anyone looking to grow a business and not have to depend on family and friends supporting then TikTok the way to go.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Of course. Now, I live in ATLANTA and moving here with my amazing husband has been a risk, a lot of challenges, and a lot of figuring it out but nothing I haven’t done before. We moved to ATL October 2021, got married in March 2022, and in our first apartment our neighbor accidentally shot a bullet into the wall of the room we both were watching a movie in and that really traumatized us for about a year. Overcoming those anxieties and just dealing with life, a new city and a new marriage was a challenging time for us. It only brought us closer and taught us how to handle challenges together as a unit. God is with us so we don’t have to face challenges alone. When I’m feeling burnt out or overwhelmed I always remind myself of the promises God told me and keep going!
