We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joseph Lopez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joseph below.
Hi Joseph, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Starting The Crawl Drinks happened like some of my ideas on a whim. I started to think of a concept of traveling from gas station to gas station, but then expanded it to other places to go like bars, pub, and breweries. As I was driving around for work the idea started to brew more in my brain and I was getting a better picture of what it could be. I started talking to my wife about it and then my friend Paul who’s a homebrewer. Once Paul said he would be in on the project I started to get ideas for my first episode where I covered Thatches in Denville. In that video I covered the town, and the pub itself and featured a drink. This was the idea, but since then I realized that was a big task to cover every time. Paul introduced the concept of intros and outros to the videos, but like all ideas need some fine tuning. We both realized getting our video’s to a minute or two is key especially catering to YouTube and TikTok. The one moment that made me realize The Crawl Drinks was working was when we were invited to Midland Brew House in Saddle Brook.
Joseph, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As I started before I kind of just drove into the pool and I am still learning as I go along. I have been drinking beer, spirits, and wine for a good portion of my life. However, this is the first time I had to stop and actually taste what I was drinking and get a feel for a place where I am at. As a native New Yorker it is hard for me to stop and smell the roses. Once I started to dive into the beer community I started to realize there was a lot to learn and there’s a lot of laid back easy going people who just love beer. I also thought doing The Crawl Drinks may help people to find places that they never heard of before. I wanted to cover the history of the place I am featuring in my videos as well so there more behind the drink. Especially with current laws in New Jersey: breweries have to give “tours” so I thought and still think my video can help out with that as well.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I still feel like I am in my infancy stage and still growing so feedback is a strong one. Especially positive feedback. I am working on getting better at networking and reaching out to places and letting them know who I am.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes. At the current moment I do everything on my iPhone and use a video editor. If I knew I would go down this route I would tell past me to go take video or picture classes while I was in school.
