We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chi Ilochi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chi below.
Hi Chi, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission the drives your brand?
The story behind Styling By Chi’s mission was one I never anticipated. I originally created Styling By Chi, because I loved being able to express myself through fashion styling. Fashion styling helped improve my mental health, and overall being, and once I took notice of that I wanted to pay it forward. I wanted everyone to be able to feel good through fashion and style the same way I was. I never thought I’d find my company mission through my own self discovery, but I am so thankful I have.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Chi Ilochi and I am a 22 year old Nigerian American Fashion Stylist and Founder of the company “Styling By Chi”. I got into the fashion industry because I wanted to create something I didn’t see. Very seldom do we hear about how fashion styling can change one’s life for the better, and I wanted to change that. The fashion industry can be self serving at times like all industries, but it can also be life changing. Styling By Chi provides services that range from but aren’t limited to; Photoshoot Styling, Styling Consultations, Vintage Subscription Boxes, and Virtual Styling. What I am most proud of, is the philanthropic element of Styling By Chi that provides free clothing and styling services to those who are homeless, mentally and physically impaired, autistic and at risk.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by staying consistent and I advise every business owner to do the same. Yes, some posts may receive less engagement than others, but I guarantee you that each time you post you’re opening the door for a potential client. Everyone may not believe in your business at first, but when people see you believe in your business they have no choice but to follow suit.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the concept of “grind culture”, I learned this the hard way because I burned myself out. Entrepreneurs are always told to “grind” and are hardly ever told to rest. I’ve learned that resting and taking time away helps you improve as a business owner and individual. You want yourself and client to receive the best version of you, and they can’t unless you take a moment to rest.
