Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jorge Muñoz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jorge , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
It was back in 2015 after I got selected with a few other talents to audition at an event called ipop in Los Angeles where I would sing and act to get callbacks from agencies in the industry. After what I would say was a successful audition, I realized I couldn’t push music away anymore. I was studying advertising at the time but I knew that it was time for me to go fultime on music.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Im originally from Chile, My name is Jorge Anibal Munoz Leon but I go by Hannibal Leon. I took some music production classes while in Chile to be able to produce my own music without having to rely on someone else. After some time I realized that I needed more, so I had the chance to study in LA at Icon Collective and I took it. At school people started knowing me as a singer-songwriter, which led me to collaborate with friends. Collaborating with producers helped me build real friendships, with the kind of friends that would actually help me get an interview at the remix and original songs contest platform called SKIO music. That’s where I got my first real job in the Industry where I got to work as an A&R. Now, I’ve also worked coproducing live shows for different artists and also as a songwriter with an amazing producer from Chile. The main services that I offer right now are mainly as singer for producers that already have built a song and as a songwriter for producers and artists. I think what sets me apart from others is that I try to work with people that takes music seriously and people that recongnices the value of your work as a creation and not just for the money and fame. Personally that helped me to create true frienships with really talented people. I can’t be just business for me. What Im most proud of myself is that even though its hard to fully commit to an artistic career, I kept going and discovered along the way that it doesn’t matter how big your dreams and goals are, you can actually achieve them. Whenever I get the chance to talk to the artists that I work with about their dreams and goals I always share my experience and encourage them to keep going and I let them know that I truly believe in their talent and that they can make it in this industry.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that not because our goals in mind are rigid, the way to achieve them has to be too. I was so focused on becoming an artist and building a path before actually walked it that I couldn’t see that this would only lead to anxiety and frustration. There are many branches, opportunities that you may have not considered that could feel like deviating from your goal but it is helping you to really achive it. Don’t try to control everything and take everything as experience, this will make you a better artist and better in many other aspects of your life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being an artist and recognizing yourself as such, gives you the power and freedom onf knowing that there are no limits. You are not only what you’re best at. You can be a singer, you can also be a painter, a writer, professionally competing at some sport or maybe coding and creating websites. A creative can be whatever they want whenever they want without feeling the pressure of what they’ve been taught while growing up.
