Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dylan Harris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dylan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
At one of the last gigs we did at the DBA Wine Bar in Pomona we had a guy who came up to us after our set and gave us a drawing he made of us playing. I’ve been performing live in front of audiences over ten years both as Superloser and with other artists, and I’ve never had anything like that happen. The idea of other creative minds reaching across to our collective creative minds through their form of art is really something that just leaves me in awe, and it’s something that I take to heart.

Dylan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the frontman of the indie rock group Superloser. I started the group back in 2019 with the intention of it being a solo project where I play all the instruments on recordings and have a band join me live, but then I met the members who now make up the group and the plan shifted to being an actual band. The music we make is very much inspired by a combination of the 60’s California sound of groups like The Beach Boys and The Byrds, and the heavier, 2000’s rock revival stylings of groups like The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys, with the songs I write always evolving in an effort to keep the rock genre moving forward. Even with moving forward in the rock genre the main idea behind the songs and the band as a whole is the idea of handing our fans a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses and show them that the world isn’t so bad. So much music nowadays especially within rock wants to trend towards darker subject matter and sometimes just straight negativity, so we try to do what we can to show the brighter side of that lens and go against that grain. Last June we released our debut album “Hanging On” and we received quite a bit of widespread acclaim for that release. It debuted at #25 on the NACC radio charts nationally and regionally it hit the top 10 in several different markets including our home state of California, Illinois, New York, and Maine. We even had a write up on one of our most beloved songs, “Green -Eyed Wonder” in a popular London based website which praised it as an amazing old fashioned love song with dreamy imagery.. Things are definitely on the up and up for the group, and we hope that people from all around the world would want to join us on this journey, and let us bring a little bit of California sunshine through our music.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect as being a frontman and a songwriter is being able to meet people from all walks of life at our shows and just be able to see life through their lens for a minute. It’s always a very humbling experience for me because I never expect nor did I expect people to dig these songs we’ve released. So getting to talk to others not just about the songs we played but just about them and how they’re doing leaves me very encouraged and enlightened with great inspiration. It’s even inspired some of our more recent songs.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Ultimately what society could do to support artists like Superloser, our local contemporaries, and artists no matter what their specialty is find ways to connect with through social media and for musicians keep up to date on their live appearances. If they’re playing local to you, go to their shows, and buy their merch direct from them. Stream their music on your favorite streaming platform and share it to your social media. The better option if available is if they have a website featuring their music or merch is to buy it directly from there and be sure that if you support them through purchasing their content that they’re getting the money directly. What most people don’t realize is that whenever you stream music or purchase merch from a third party platform, that third party takes a cut which leaves the artist with very little of the full cost that you’d pay. So making sure that artists are getting their full cut is something I’d say is really important.
