We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Camrie Wilkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Camrie, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In today’s society, I believe it takes hard work, determination, faith & consistency to be successful. Becoming a business owner at a young age, I feel as though I have faced a lot of hardships but it is your drive and perseverance that gets you through it.
I started my lash business while in college. I was a young adult, going out of state for school, trying to make extra money by using this new skill I had just learned. I had to figure out how to make a name for myself, gain clientele, adjust my pricing & policies to suit my audience, etc. all while getting the swing of actually being in college. There were many times I felt like my business wouldn’t take off, or as though I was losing focus. I will admit it was difficult at times to juggle school & business but my want to be successful outweighed anything else.
There were times when I had lots of school work due, on top of having clients, & trying to create content. I had to learn how to organize my tasks & prioritize what was important. Learning these important life skills not only helped me then, but they continue to play a major role in how I operate now.
From doing lashes on the side as a full time college student to now a full time lash artist & salon owner, I can truly say that the only thing that can ever stand in the way between you & success is yourself. You have to be the one to set your goal, determine the steps you need to take to get there & go for it! Hard work, determination, faith & consistency is the recipe for successful, in any aspect of life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Camrie Wilkins, I am a eyelash technician and salon owner from Prince Georges County, Maryland. I started my business back in 2019 as a full time college student attending The Lincoln University of PA. I wanted to get into the lash industry because during that time it was new, not too many people knew about it & I wanted to find another source of income. I started with just doing the individual lash services, then branched out to selling products and then adding additional components such as eyebrow services & trainings. Not too long after graduating from college, I went full-time with lashing & was able to make 6 figures being self-employed. In April of 2022, I opened my salon, The Celebrity Co. Lash Bar, located in Capitol Heights, Maryland. Being able to not only become self-employed, but also opening my own salon has been nothing short of amazing. I’d be lying if I said it was easy, but I can for sure say it’s worth all of the work.
I love bringing women joy by enhancing their beauty & boosting their confidence. My job allows me to do that and then some.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
From doing lashes here and there while in college, and only having a hand full of clients, to going full time and being booked up is a huge step up. I would say overtime I stayed consistent with my marketing & branding, which helped tremendously at growing my clientele. Always thinking about what’s next, not getting too caught up on the now is also important in expansion. I knew I wanted more, I wanted to go up a level and just did what it took to get there.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
In the beauty industry, there are a lot of things that go into building your reputation. Most people assume it’s only the quality of your work, but its more than that. Your work ethic, customer service, mannerism, creativity, etc. all plays a role. Getting new clients is the easy part, keeping them is what builds a business.
