We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Creasman Barnett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Oftentimes I am asked to complete a project in memory of a loved one who has passed. Over the course of my time doing custom painting commissions for clients, I have done a few dozen of these. It means a lot to me to be entrusted with the memory, and on a personal level it is gratifying to share my love for painting in this specific way.
Sarah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello! My name is Sarah Creasman Barnett and I am a practicing artist in Dallas. I primarily work in acrylic and mixed media. My work can be seen on my website, www.sarahcreasman.com, and on Instagram @sarahcreasmanart. I’ve been creating custom paintings for clients for about 10 years. I’ve always been encouraged to continue receiving paintings requests throughout the years. It means a lot to me to recreate special memories for clients.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish social media platforms like Instagram would have been around when I was an art student a million years ago. I’ve discovered so many amazing contemporary artists over the years on Instagram which has really influenced my own work. It’s really wonderful to be able to see what artists around the world are creating simultaneously. This would have been such an asset as a student developing skills and style.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think it’s great when people want original art on their walls. It can be so easy to buy something from a big box store because it matches your couch. Having an original piece of art on your wall really breathes vibrancy into a space, and its something to cherish for generations. Buying directly from the artist is a great way to support the artistic community around you.
