We recently connected with Cat Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Cat, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project that I was privileged to work on was the birthday party for a dear family friend’s mother. This birthday party was planned by the grandchildren to fulfill the last request of the grandmother who was suffering from brain cancer. Being able to photograph their grandmother and all her remaining siblings, watching them laugh, and photographing her tears being wiped by her brother was heart-warming. It was such a surreal moment that I will value for the rest of my life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Cat Williams, one of the easiest names to remember with one of the most unique job titles, a Photography Curator. A Photography Curator is also known to some as a photographer that merges the artistic imagery of a Client-Creative and the creative talents of the photographer.
As a photographer, I have a creative and untraditional approach to enhancing the concept of “The Shoot”. Untraditional photo experiences such as Family Storytelling include Family and Birth Photography. These are unscripted moments in the life of a family that is photographed in a journalistic style. Birth Photography documents the birthing process beginning with the laboring process, the actual delivery, and the moments shortly after the family begin bonding with their newest member. Family Documentary Photography follows a family’s interactions throughout their day with no posing or intervention from the Photography Curator.
I love applying my fun and inviting personality into making the photoshoot a memorable experience. My custom client experience is legendary because continuously find innovative ways to connect with client-creatives beforehand in music tastes and other interests.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The creative journey is driven by two goals. The first goal is to artistically highlight and dismantle the misconceptions of preconceived notions of various ethnic groups. The second is to develop a signature style of photography that will be studied and emulated by others, from the novice to the professional.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative artist is the process, the actual production, the end product, and the viewers’ reactions. Dreaming up or drafting the idea of a Photo Experience allows me to be float free in the awesome world of my imagination. When it is time to shoot the project, I begin to enter into my “zone”. I can tap into my goofy side without any judgment of the model or client because they are enjoying themselves also. Seeing the printed image from the project sets my heart ablaze with joy and pride but it’s the viewers’ excitement that humbles me.
