We recently connected with Beth Romer and have shared our conversation below.
Beth, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I started L&L specifically to run things differently. L&L Collective was born out of frustration. As a working mom, I was constantly having to pick between my work and my kids. One day work would win, the next day my kids would win. I had this constant feeling of failing at the two things I wanted to rock at. It is so easy to accept that working in a creative field, fire drills will happen, deadlines will be tight, and life will always be crazy but truthfully that wasn’t sitting right with me.
I knew I could create a company where life comes first. Moms wouldn’t have to choose between their kids and their work. We would be able to do it all, and do it all with a beautiful work life balance. So the idea became a reality. L&L Collective brings great marketing, strategy, and design to our clients on a very organized schedule. We run our agency a month in advance so when a kid is sick or you need a mental health day, you take it without the stress of how your work is going to get finished. We work with our clients on the expectations. We talk through their goals and needs and we create a timeline that works for all of us.
I am really proud of what we have been able to accomplish and even more proud that as we continue to grow, this idea only gets stronger. We will forever prioritize life before work.
Beth, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Beth, a business owner, creative thinker, mom of three, and I am obsessed with manifesting. I founded L&L Collective in 2021 with the vision of bringing great marketing to businesses of all sizes. It shouldn’t matter if your budget is $500 or $50k, you deserve a great strategy and someone who believes in the success of your business. With over 15 years of “real world” experience under my belt, I have worn many hats! With a passion for retail, I spent the early days of my career working for Abercrombie & Fitch headquarters and transitioned over to the buying side at Speedway. Two very different retailers with two very different experiences so I found myself craving creativity and I started working for a marketing agency. This is when I realized how much I love having clients, building relationships, and fostering partnerships that last a lifetime.
Fast forward a few years, and L&L Collective was born. At L&L we strive to bring flexible, creative, and innovative marketing solutions to your business. Along with some wit, fun, and laughs! We never take ourselves too seriously and becoming an extension of your team is our ultimate goal. We don’t believe in a ‘one size fits all’ marketing model for businesses. We create strategies from scratch based on business goals, we shift tactics based on what’s delivering, and we always offer opportunities to customize. At our core, we have our clients’ best interests in mind, we’re excited about their biz, and we’ll do whatever it takes to help them succeed and shine.
Our services include full service social media strategy & management, branding, digital ads, email marketing, content, copy & design, and pretty much anything else you can think of!
We are a group of real people who treat our clients like real people. I am proud of how much we’ve grown in the last two years and I am proud that we actually walk the walk when it comes to our company values. Most importantly, I am proud that I took an idea in my head and made it a reality.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
“I can’t do that, someone is already doing it.” I mean seriously, how many times have we all said this to ourselves? You have an idea and it sounds great and then you see it’s already being done and you give it up. Teaching myself that there is enough success to go around for everyone in the industry has been the biggest game changer. Sure, someone may be doing something similar already, but they aren’t doing it exactly like you.
Once I started looking at other’s success as a map that I could one day achieve, things started shifting for me. I have learned to celebrate other’s wins and success, cheer them on, and be grateful that I get to see others killing it in life. I choose every day to approach my business and life from a grateful, abundant heart and I try to eliminate fear. Is it hard to do as a business owner sometimes? Of course. Especially if you lose a client or potential client.
But I will tell you one thing I learned from @manifestionbabe is that your whole business will change once you realize you already have everything you need and that everything else you want is to just add fun.
There is enough success for everyone. And I’ll be your number one fan if you need one.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
We love and appreciate our clients. We couldn’t do what we do without them! That is why it’s important they know we are here for them every step of the way. For us, we prioritize communication and showing them our gratitude.
We have slack channels with our clients so they always have a way to get in touch with one of us. Our clients are able to send us photos, ideas, feedback, and we are able to implement it in real time. We also love having scheduled calls with our clients – whether weekly, monthly, or quarterly, whatever works for our client’s schedule, works for us.
My best advice for anyone running a business is to invest in your gift giving. It will create strong brand loyalty, excitement, and referrals. Showing appreciation to our clients is something we do best at L&L Collective. Thank you notes go a long way (especially hand written ones!) and we love sending treats “just because”. It’s so fun to send referral and thank you gifts that are unique to each client. I mean come on, who wouldn’t want to receive a box of ice cream or a steak dinner in the mail?! Gift giving is our love language so curating the perfect holiday gift for our clients is a top priority for us.
