We recently connected with Desiree Durham and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Desiree thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When you’ve been a professional in an industry for long enough, you’ll experience moments when the entire field takes a U-Turn, an instance where the consensus completely flips upside down or where the “best practices” completely change. If you’ve experienced such a U-Turn over the course of your professional career, we’d love to hear about it.
Body sculpting is a booming field, but it’s important to consider state regulations before pursuing it as a career. In some states, offering body contouring services requires a license as a medical professional, which has caused me to lose potential students. Services such as skin tightening or those involving radio frequency may fall under this requirement. While the laws around this have changed in recent years, it’s still a barrier to entry for some. Aspiring body sculptors should research state regulations before pursuing this career path to ensure they’re able to offer the services they want depending on where they live.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I had a major setback in my life a few years back and I ended up getting into trouble with the law. A situation like that can really make you think about a lot. I wanted to change my life and be on a more positive path. Being caught up like that also made me realize that I didn’t want to work underneath anybody else especially after my military career.
I had a major setback in my life a few years back and I ended up getting into trouble with the law. A situation like that can really make you think about a lot. I wanted to change my life and be on a more positive path. Being caught up like that also made me realize that I didn’t want to work underneath anybody else especially after my military career. I offer noninvasive body contouring or non surgical procedures to enhance the body. My services include contouring a person’s shape and can help with weight loss.
My top priority when working with clients is helping them improve their self-esteem. Many of my clients seek my services to change or enhance their physical appearance, and I collaborate with them to achieve their desired results. However, I always stress the importance of consistency and encourage them to maintain a healthy lifestyle through exercise and proper nutrition for optimal results. To further support their journey, I also offer TrueBeautybyDee shapewear to help them achieve their body goals. What sets me apart from other body sculpting companies is my exceptional customer service and ability to tailor packages to meet my clients’ specific needs. As a passionate service provider, I deeply care about my clients’ success. The biggest part of my clientele are mothers and it is important for me to work with them to restore their pre-childbirth body shape. My strong work ethic means that I am always available to answer client questions through various channels, including DMs, calls, texts, and emails.
I am most proud of how much my company has grown over this short period of time. I also marvel over my skills and how they have gotten better over time. At the end of the day, the results speak for themselves because I’ve gained so much exposure to new clientele all because of my success. The work I have done has inspired people to learn body sculpting from me. I offer a TrueBeautybyDee Master Class which is in person and virtual so that they can learn my special techniques. They don’t call me the ‘Booty Goat’ for nothing and my students can learn why.
Lastly, I am very proud of my social media presence. I have gained over 20k followers on my IG platform and my followers like my content. I have learned how to edit videos and showcase my fire results. The reels I have made on IG have brought great attention to my services. Social media is one of the best tools I have used to promote my business.
It is important for people to know that I am a retired veteran of 5 years and I am Black woman owned business.
What I want my potential clients to know about my brand is I am always staying up on trends. It is important for me to find new services to add for my clients. It is crucial to show your work and I make sure I take before and after photos. I love when my clients can see the progress of their body through pictures. Plus,I have my own vendors for my equipment and it’s the best machinery in the body sculpting game. Lastly, my company offers great customer service and results.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Word of mouth has truly helped build my reputation! TrueBeautyByDee also has military clients and I have helped them achieve their desired weight so that they could pass the height and weight portion of their examinations. Another thing that was vital to my business was setting my company up on Google where I have been able to get great reviews.
My creativity has also helped me build my reputation. I always like to have fun when creating the names for my sales. For example, I created a sale for Halloween called “Spooky Booty.” I even had one for Spring called “Spring is back, where ya at.” I will make promotional flyers and post them on social media. People always find them catchy.
I have created a body sculpting manual that has a lot of valuable information about the machine settings that help body sculptors enhance their skills. With my master class, I am a phenomenal teacher and go into detail explaining topics step by step. I am very patient with my students. My trainings also includes internships after you take the course at my company. Getting real practice in the field allows you to work on clients and build confidence. The training helps them before they open their own shop so that they are prepared.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that you can not let your clients be your friends. Business is business. There has to be mutual respect because there have been instances where clients did not want to pay the full amounts on packages. I had to create a better system for payments. I took a huge loss prior to changing my policies. You will have some individuals take advantage of your brand. With my new systems in place, I now can ensure that I am not losing out on the money that I earned and still maintain a good work balance with my clients. When providing packages, it’s important that my clients make full payments upfront. As someone who works in the service industry, I must get paid for my labor. This benefits not only myself but also my clients because I can provide them with the best service possible.
