Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kathryn Fraggos. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kathryn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
How is this for a big risk…
My husband and I were professional performers living in NYC, and also both working at an extremely well paying, high-end fitness institution. I was training A-list celebrities almost daily, and my husband was fortunate enough to be performing alongside a few of them as well. After 11 years in NYC, however, we both decided that it was time for a change.
So – we decided to roll the dice. We moved to a new state where we knew no one, opened up a fitness studio in a town we knew nothing about, and started life over as small business owners. Something that was as foreign to us as the no-left-turn, must-use-these-weird-jug-handles in New Jersey!
It has turned out to be the hardest thing we have ever done. We are doing well for the most part and are so happy with our overall growth, but we have a newfound respect and admiration for all startups and small business owners… because this is hard and not to be taken lightly, We hope to continue to learn, growth, and (hopefully) expand.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! My name is Katy and I am the founder of Perspirology. I have a BFA from Point Park University with a double concentration in Jazz and Ballet. I am a professional dancer and performer who has always had a love for fitness. I hold certifications in Pilates and several certifications through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, including: personal training, women’s fitness, youth fitness, behavioral change specialist, weight-loss specialist, and group personal training. When I decided it was time to for a change from the world of performing, it seemed only natural to combine my passion for dance and fitness into a workout program. Thus. Perspirology was born. Perspirology is a dance-based, musically driven total body workout. We also offer trampoline workouts, full-body toning workouts, and barre classes. I think what sets up apart from others is that the workout is ever evolving in the sense that there is new content weekly to help avoid those fitness plateaus.
I am most proud of the fact that my husband and I were able to build this studio from the ground up without any real knowledge on how to open a business, run a business, and do it all in a town / state that neither of us had any affiliation with. We are now in the process of opening our second studio in Middletown, NJ, slated to open in fall of 2023. In addition to our brick and mortar studios, we also offer an AT HOME streaming site / app with streamers from around the world, and a new E-commerce shop launching soon! Clients will be able to purchase our branded equipment and studio apparel.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been good ol’ fashioned word of mouth! When we first opened our business, there were DAYS that we wouldn’t have a single person come in for class. We were confident, however, that if we could just get a couple people through the door, they would help us start spreading the word. Thankfully, we were right! Clients starting coming in and coming back because our workout is fun, effective, and we would like to think that we are very welcoming and approachable.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Before we opened our studio, we didn’t even know what a hashtag was! We now have 21.6k followers on Instagram! It was trial and error for a lot of this, but we found that by being our truest selves, and having that transparency on social media was our biggest asset when building our following. What you see is what you get on our page. We don’t retouch and we try to portray our studio, and ourselves as we truly are. Just be yourself, have some fun, and don’t take it too seriously!
