We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabriel Turner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabriel, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
When I think about certain risks I’ve taken, my mind immediately goes back to a specific event. At an early age, I can remember being interested in music and when it came to an instrument, electric guitar was the “Holy Grail”. I remember listening to my favorite artists then running to my room to try and play the guitar parts. It was such an unknown area in my journey, because I had no idea where to start. Finally, I understood how to play though error and multiple DVD rentals.
My early, “self taught” moments, allowed me to take one of my biggest risks. That risk was performing in front of about three hundred people. At the age of 11, a group of friends and I decided to enter a talent show in Houston, Tx. I can remember standing in front of the crowd and thinking “I hope I don’t forget the lyrics”. As I began to sing and play, my butterflies began to fly away and confidence began to grow in its place. After our performance, the crowd cheered and we placed 3rd amongst seasoned musicians. Moments like that make taking risks rewarding.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I began playing music at the age of eleven and soon developed a love for writing and playing the guitar. As I mentioned earlier, my first performance was at a local talent show and after that, I was driven to hopefully make this my full-time dream job.
I believe my sound is what sets me apart from others. My sound includes vocals and song structures that tell a story. That story is based on my own personal life journey, and hopefully my journey will inspire others to truly think about life and all it has to offer.
I’m most most proud of my current songs available on all platforms. One of my favorites is titled “Go To Sleep”. This song was inspired by my children. Throughout the song, you can hear actual sound bits from my children. I hope my children will one day hear and understand the love I have for them
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My music journey was and is not easy. Several challenging roadblocks seemed to hinder my abilities to stay on track. Those challenges were insecurities in my performance, vocals and mainly just self-doubt. Eventually, I started truly playing music at the age of 12 and began to write around 15 years old. 15 was also the age where I had my first live performance. Looking back, I’ve come a long way and still have far to go, but I do believe I’m growing and have the ability to take my talents as far as God will allow. During all this, I’ve learned to never give up, keep your eyes on the end goal and enjoy the journey.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is looking out into an audience and seeing individuals singing your songs. I can remember once performing a new song in front of an audience and towards the end of the song, I could hear the entire room singing along in chorus. That moment touched me and allowed me to realize my gift and to keep moving toward my goals.
