We caught up with the brilliant and insightful D’Asia Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
D’Asia , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I started my business in the middle of a pandemic! (COVID-19) After being let go from a large franchise company due to sales, I used my last $3200 I had in my savings for start up costs. Not knowing if I would succeed or fail, just literally having faith and a clientele that believed in me. I purchased a suite, inventory, materials etc. and things took off! I eventually outgrew my small space and was able to put all of the money I made from services in 2020 back into my business and lease a storefront in March 2021!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I always knew that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I would do makeup on my friends in college but never took it serious just did it for extra money. I decided that I no longer wanted to go to college, I was just there because it’s what my parents wanted for me. I wanted to do something that no one else in my city was doing at the time so I enrolled into the Esthetics program and Douglas J Aveda in Grand Rapids Michigan fall of 2017. I fell in love with skin care and body waxing was my niche. Once I researched the industry I realized how much money I could make and how many opportunities I could have if I turned this into my career. Since then I’ve built a reputation for myself great enough to have serviced over 400+ women from my city and the surrounding areas. I’ve influenced others to become their own boss and started a waxing course where they can learn my technique once they obtain their license! I feel this sets me apart from others is that I don’t mind helping people get to where I am. I want the people to know that if you want something you have to have the passion and dedication for whatever it is you do.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Word of mouth most definitely! Social media goes a long way so far as connections, but word of mouth will always be at the top of my list. I met a client while I was working at my job and we built a great relationship so once I started my business she found me on facebook and told all of her friends on her college campus about me and I was booked out for the entire month in a week. Staying proficient with my craft, I still service over half of these same clients.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I was let go from my job, it was 2 days before the pandemic shut the world down. I was crushed. I had a plan but it wasn’t well put together because I didn’t expect this change so soon. I didn’t know how I would get back into my field and I couldn’t survive off of my savings for long. I had no clue on how to run a business correctly or how I would get the clientele without feeling pushy. But what I also didn’t know at the time was the shut down was the time for me to plan and execute what I’d been envisioning for myself for years and now i’m here!
