We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Madison Landenberger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Madison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I (Madison) started my floral company in 2020 because I have always loved arranging flowers. My great grandmother was a florist, and while I never met Hope she has always inspired me. I love working with flowers because they are so simple and beautiful on their own but once they are put together into an arrangement their beauty is magnified. I also adore that there is not “one product” to floral. You can arrange in a million different ways with the variety of flowers there are. I also get to bless people and bring joy into their homes and events. When I started in 2020 I was a broke college student breaking even or losing money selling bouquets. All I knew at the time was that I loved arranging flowers and being able to drop them off at peoples homes. Arranging floral for me became so special because I got to bring some joy into life’s big and little moments. Sometimes I would get hired to drop off flowers to a broke college guy’s girlfriend. I so badly wanted to be apart of it, I would often lose money because I charged so little. I loved the smiles on their faces and that’s all that mattered. I soon graduated and went on to become a PreK teacher thinking that is all I would do. In my head arranging flowers was just a hobby. As that year progressed, I got asked to do a couple weddings and events, but my business was still only a hobby in my head.
This past fall something shifted in me. My husband (Brett) has his bachelors and masters in Business and he slowly started to encourage me to become a florist full time. To truly take what I love seriously and work hard to launch into my dream job.
Brett has dreamed of having his own business since grade school. Brett has become the business manager behind the company, and I do all the creative. With both our visions mixed together “& Madison Floral” has come to life.
Madison, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
& Madison is a Colorado based couple-owned floral shop that delivers joy through the art of flowers. Our mission is to help you see that beauty can be found in the big and little moments of life. As a hobby, Madison started her floral company Madison’s Bundle in 2020 in hopes of it flourishing into something special. Madison’s Great Grandmother was a florist and always inspired her. Brett has dreamed of having his own business since grade school. Together, they have created & Madison Floral. Brett is the business manager behind the company, and Madison does the creative. With both their visions mixed together & Madison sprouted. We are quickly filling up 2023 with weddings and events which has started to trickle into 2024. We love creating florals unique for each couple on their wedding day. This enhances the backdrop/mood of the event.
& Madison does all types of events. From baby showers to fundraisers we want to set the mood through floral.
We also have created a floral subscription where we deliver an arrangement to peoples doorsteps once a month.
We believe that there is not “one product” to floral. We can arrange in a million different ways with a variety of flowers/stems to create a piece unique to the customer.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Madison started her small business in 2020 but it quickly began to grow when she added her cofounder Brett in 2022. Recently married, they have big dreams for & Madison Floral.
Their story began when they were set up on a blind date in 2020. While they both attended the same University, they never met while attending. Brett graduated the year before Madison started attending. They were set up by Madison’s senior year roommate and Brett’s brother, who are also married now. After a year of dating long distance and countless flights between Kansas and Colorado… the rest is history.
Now on to the next adventure! Running & Madison Floral together.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I talked about this briefly on the first interview question. When I started my “business” it was more of a hobby to me than a legit business. I started an instagram in 2020 called “Madison’s Bundle” and planned on posting about the arrangements I made and maybe occasionally people would hire me to make them something. I was in college at the time and it was a great way for me to get my creative side out and make a tiny bit of money. For being so small I was shocked when it really did pick up off the ground. I was making small arrangements for people a couple times a month and was having a blast doing it. I loved being apart of peoples milestones. As small as a birthday to an engagement ,my flowers got to be apart of it and I loved it. Slowly I started getting asked to do weddings and did around 6 before my business truly became more than a hobby. My name was getting out there from doing events and weddings and my schedule started filling up. The biggest shift into becoming a full-time business was when my husband joined me. We rebranded and created “& Madison” together. With his business degree and my creative side we have made our floral company into an incredible career that I adore.
