Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Theresa Horne. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Theresa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I started working exclusively for myself in March 0f 2019. Previously I had been on staff at a gym, doing contract work and working for myself. When the pandemic happened I decided to take the leap and focus on building my online business. Building an online health and fitness business had always been a dream for me. I had been trying to build it slowly on the side, but so many people could not wrap their minds around the idea of virtual fitness. All of that changed when the world was forced to think differently about the virtual. So I took my in-person following and created a safe space for them to continue to move and stay fit virtually.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Theresa Horne. I am a wife of 27 years and a mother of 5 sons aged 27 to 12. I got into the health and healing industry after my own personal health journey. As I approached 40, I weighed 330 pounds. I didn’t want to go into my 40’s weighing that much, so I started to get serious about losing weight. The catalyst for me was watching my mom play on the floor with my two youngest boys. I was thinking how I won’t be able to get back up off the floor when I’m 60 years old if I still weighed 330 pounds. I thought, If I want to be a good grandma, I need to get my act together. That became the “why moment” that I held onto in the tough times. I became a fitness instructor, then a personal trainer. From there I became a sports nutrition specialist and soul care practitioner. My professional journey has largely mirrored what I needed personally.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
My field is technically health and wellness however, study after study characterizes Americans as unhealthy. Obese and failing to achieve adequate amounts of exercise. The fact is the fitness industry to not breaking through to the majority of Americans. Not everyone wants to work out in the same way we do and that is okay. It is our responsibility to help people find a way to move consistently and achieve health in a way that is sustainable for them. We have got to think outside the box instead of continuing to try to get people into our box. I had to learn if we really want everyone to have the opportunity to be healthy we have to change the way we approach health and fitness.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The book Grace Over Grind by Shae Bynes was extremely helpful for me. I did not have a background in business or entrepreneurship when I started 4 years ago. I had lots of head and book knowledge, but I was afraid to make any moves and grinding in my mind over decisions. Grace Over Grind taught me how to partner with God for my business, which was exactly what I needed to hear. I also learned how to be consistent with solid business practices without falling into the hustle and grind culture.
