We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren Osselton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lauren thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
I find nothing shows a client how much you appreciate them better than taking the time to write and send them a handwritten thank-you note. When I first started my business, I felt pressure to keep up with the trends in sending your clients beautiful, thoughtful gifts. But the thing is… I wasn’t making enough in my business yet to really DO that,,, and honestly, nothing I ever gifted a client received as much warmth and appreciation as a handwritten note! My clients truly LOVE this touch.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My mission as a sacred space holder for creative souls is to help you discover your passion, reconnect with your soul, and work through any mindset barriers keeping you from pursuing your creative desires. I began my online business as a copywriter, and while I still do love helping creatives put their passion into powerful words, my purpose in life is to shine my authentic light and tell my story and hold space for others to feel safe to do the same.
As an anxiety warrior, and eating disorder + trauma survivor, my own story + healing journey are always at the core and forefront of how I hold space for others… NORMALIZATION is a major part of what I do. I’m making a mission of being the person who I most needed during my healing, and making the world a safer place for fellow anxious creative souls to be able to live passionate, fulfilled lives.
I work with clients in a 1:1 coaching relationship, offer regular online community workshops, and am currently working on a new group coaching program coming out later this spring.
My clients are my greatest inspiration and I’ve been fortunate enough to witness, and hold space for them, during challenging experiences like burnout, anxiety, grief, and the ebbs and flows of living a creative life.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
When I first started my online business, my mind was like a sponge… searching for the answer of how to “do this thing right.” The thing is… when it comes to online business and entrepreneurship, there’s really no ONE way of doing things (so long as you have your legal ducks in a row, of course). That said, I took a coaching program REALLY early on in my journey that ended up being extremely value-maligned. I had to unlearn ALOT of the lessons I took from that program, especially in how I showed up in the marketing for my business. The program may have been great for others, but it wasn’t aligned with my energy or values. The lesson being here to take the time to really ground yourself in your values and goals before rushing to invest in new programs and offerings when you’re just getting started.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivoting is honestly a necessary part of being a creative soul and entrepreneur. Don’t EVER put the pressure on yourself to have to feel like ANYTHING is forever. When I first started my business, I was trying to offer ALL marketing services when really copywriting was my specialty. I niched down and found so much more success in copywriting alone. I naturally started to add mentorship and coaching to my business, but it took ME suffering a life-altering trauma myself -when I survived a fatal fire in 2022 – that made me become MUCH more open about my own story and go more full-on with my coaching business. I’m so passionate about my work + look forward to seeing how it will continue to evolve naturally with my clients and my own life!
