We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Camden a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Camden, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I think my upcoming EP, “Erosion”, is the most meaningful project I’ve worked on to this point. I wrote the 5 song compilation during 2020, when there was a lot of political turmoil, and lots of families were finding themselves on opposite ends of the political spectrum. I produced the project with my friend Luke Saison, who helped me push my limits sonically and lyrically. He’s so good at creating music with no rules or expectations for what the project has to turn out like. The result was something that almost feels ground breaking. My voice tends to be received as relaxing, or laid back, but somehow this project pushed me to write a song like the second track, “Throw Up” where I scream at the end of the chorus. It just felt like the only way to express what I was actually feeling in the moment, and I feel like a lot of people see 2020 the same way.
Camden, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up in a small town, singing in church and school plays. I studied music in college, but it was classically based, and geared towards a future career in education. It wasn’t until I finished school and was trying to figure out what to do with my life, that I realized I wanted to pursue a career in artistry and songwriting. I remember working a 9-5 job, and one of the older employees asking me “if you had a billion dollars in the bank and money didn’t matter, what would you still be doing?” The answer was writing and performing music. It felt like a lofty dream at the time, but I chased that dream to Nashville, and later London, then LA. I’m still not as far as I’d like to be career wise, but I feel like I’m putting good things into the world by creating my art. It’s something I love, and life is too short to not give it all I’ve got.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I walked into an art store, and even though the price of the art on display was out of my price range, I didn’t question it. I thought, “this art must be worth this to the right buyer.”
I think music can be the same way. Currently music has very little value globally because anyone can stream it for free. But what if we lived in a world where music was considered art, and musicians were paid by individuals who admired their work?
I don’t think NFT’s are fully figured out yet, but I do appreciate the concept. I’ve released two songs on a website called sound.xyz, and the response from the NFT community was actually really encouraging. NFT collectors didn’t seem to be in it for the “financial investment”. The sense I got was that collectors are more like music savants who enjoy supporting indie artists they believe in. In return, I gave collectors a free ticket to any future shows that I play, and also included them in a group chat where they’ll be the first to know about music releases and shows…etc.
I’m actually getting ready to play an online show in collaboration with a Web3 company called Ursa Live. I’ll be sure to post details on my socials when the time comes, but the date is set for April 2nd at 4pm PST.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
This is a great question. I wish I would’ve known that music was a viable career path from an earlier age. It just seemed so far away from my small town, and I didn’t know anyone who was even trying to pursue it. Moving to LA was eye opening because so many people I’ve met in the industry started by going to an industry based music school, which then led to an internship at a label, which turned into a job. All that to say, if you’re reading this and want to work in music, it’s possible. You just need to move to the cities where it’s happening (i.e. LA, Nashville, London, New York…etc)
