We were lucky to catch up with Jim Wright recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jim thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
My business started as a mobile recording service in 2001. But the genisis came from two different ideas that are merged. The band I was involved in circa 1998 we recorded by a mobile recording service and I was also trying to turn all my old band demos (stored on tape at the time) in to a digital format to keep them from further degrading. So as I was looking at digital recorders the idea struck me that I could get a really nice Fostex VF16 and ultimately get other people to fund the gear by charging them a crazy cheap price for mobile recording their band in super clean digital. I would also have access to the gear for my own use. So I learned the board recording my own project at home. Then I hit up my friends band and recorded then for FREE. (just in case it was horrible they couldnt yell at me). And it was BAD! BUT I learned the worst of my errors (digital redline). So on my next project that was paid I did a pretty good job! and in the hundreds of projects since, the learning process continues
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We started serving the needs of the local music community in 2001 as a mobile recording service. “We Bring the Studio to YOU!” As time passed, Avalon’s repertoire included services such as live sound, venue management, and monthly/hourly rehearsal. We currently feature 38 monthly rehearsal spaces in East Fort Worth TX and also provide AV services such as full-service recording, video production/editing, graphics, and photography.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
I think MANY of us had a near death moment during the pandemic. Having the Government randomly tell you to close your business would be a death sentance for most businesses. My services dropped to zero and I reached out to my commercial property landlord and we worked out a payment plan where I would pay back anything I had dropped over the following year after the pandemic cleared up. I also reached out to my jamroom/storage clients and told if thing were bad for them I would accept half rent from them for a cuple months but I would need it paid back over the following 4 months. I only lost a coulple customers and I was able to saty afloat.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
If I cant eat it or f$%k I will likely piss on it and walk away.
