We recently connected with Melina Mayfield and have shared our conversation below.
Melina, appreciate you joining us today. How did you find your key vendor or vendors? Maybe you can share the backstory and share some context and the relevant details to help us understand why you chose them, why they chose you, etc.
The key to finding good vendors is RESEARCH. You must do your due diligence and take the time to really research your industry and see what is being offered. Go that extra step and create price/offering comparisons and see what is best for you and your business. I personally did just that. I researched several companies supplying wholesale flowers, compared prices and narrowed my choices to two vendors that I felt would suit my needs. I went with my first choice but found that vendor to be a bit disingenuous. My second choice has worked out well for the business, we have built a great working relationship and they look out for me. That is another key component, relationship building. When you have a good rapport with your vendors, they will take care of you. Initially, I went with my first choice because of price, but chose the second choice due to customer service. I think the company I work with gels better with me and understands my needs.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I founded my floral and décor company, By M Squared®, in 2019 because of my love for decorating! I’ve always been drawn to décor and styling, and even have a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, Textiles & Design. At By M Squared® we help our clients have the event of their dreams by providing bespoke décor and arrangements that are tailored to fit their event needs. We service the entire DFW metroplex and outlying cities, and we travel as well. Our services include: wedding florals and décor, corporate event styling, baby and bridal showers, birthday and dinner parties, proposal set-ups, galas, and social events. We love bringing our client’s ideas to life. At By M Squared® we strive to listen to our clients wants and desires and we make every effort to make their wishes come to fruition. We give each client personal consideration, and we pride ourselves in excellent customer service. We want to make our clients experience smooth and worry free by knowing that all their décor needs will be executed with care, attention to detail, and professionalism. We want our clients to walk away with a positive experience and a desire to return.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that failure is a bad thing. Failure is not a bad thing it is an opportunity for learning and growth. Failure teaches us what works and what doesn’t. I used to get so upset when something I tried didn’t work, but now I look at it as, “Ok, this worked, this didn’t, now I know what to change or work on.”.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
In a service-based industry like mine word of mouth is always the best way to get new clients, but the next best thing is social media. Social media gives potential clients a chance to see another side of your business, beyond what your website has to offer. It gives them a chance to see what you offer in a more up close and personal way. You can take them behind the scenes, share tips, and let them get to know the person behind the brand as well.
