Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Izzy Lugo III. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Izzy , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
I think that understanding that the mischaracterization of my work has been evident throughout my career to date. My journey to this point of my life has been people trying to fit me in the box that they think I would be great at–without asking me first. I’ve learned to speak up for myself in these situations and be my own biggest fan, even when there are doubters.
Izzy , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Ever since I was a kid, I thought my life was going to be me working in sports until I retired. I received a sports management degree and even had a job in sales with the Milwaukee Bucks right out of college. 3 months in, I hated it. I hated what I was doing and decided to leave after just 6 months. That experience was replicated until someone finally gave me a chance to show my skills as a content/influencer marketer.
Fast forward a year, I started an agency with friends that did great until the pandemic hit and suddenly, I was right back at square one and the only jobs calling were in sales. But I stayed committed to my goals and aspirations and eventually someone gave me a chance. The rest has been history. I’ve been able to be a consultant for brands like Nike and Colgate while creating content for countless others.
The moral of the story for me has always been to be your biggest fan, especially in the darkest moments.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The University of Youtube. I think the next generation of creatives really has this down but I didn’t realize the power of Youtube until I wanted to learn something new. I’ve taught myself everything from influencer marketing tactics to creator growth strategies and more all through Youtube. It’s free and I slept on it for a long time but it’s a tool that people should utilize everyday.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think the mission behind everything I do today is to provide a platform for creators. No matter if you’re big or small. Everyone can be a creator and trusting yourself to make something is the first step. Through my podcast, Strange on Purpose, I have been able to start to build that platform while highlighting some of the most amazing creators that most haven’t heard of and it’s just the start.
