We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Reke a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Reke, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I’m definitely most joyous as an artist, it has its pros & cons seeing as how somedays my saddest moments stem From
Being an artist as well. wether it be frustration with connecting to my listeners through the music, writers block, pushing myself creatively etc. i wouldn’t trade it for anything though. I never think about what it’s like to have a “regular” job because ultimately I still will do both full-time until I can afford for my family to live solely off my music. Seems like that moment is coming soon but I’m just staying patient & confident
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I go by the name of “Reke” which is my middle name, I’ve always felt that’s a big part of me staying authentic to myself. I’ve been a recording artist officially for about 3 years now. In the beginning I was willing to try anything to get my family in a better position financially, shortly after I started making music I realized how natural it was to me. Then I realized this is simply what I’m SUPPOSED to be doing, the passion I grew for music is undeniable & I believe you can hear it in my music. Im focused on my career but I haven’t dismissed the idea of writing for other artist in the industry if the opportunity presents itself.
I feel
Like work ethic and my ability to relate to my listeners while being authentic is what separates me from majority of acts you’ll hear today in the industry.
I’m most proud of my success as an independent artist thus far, being an independent artist in a industry dominated by machines/ billion dollar record labels isn’t easy. Much more rewarding this way, younger me couldn’t be more proud of current me!
What I always want anybody i encounter to take away from
A interaction with me/my music is, it wasn’t always like this. Supreme confidence , humbleness & belief in myself got me out of many dark places I’ve been able to escape, that applies more to life in general than music, but it was always bigger than music for me. I wanna change peoples perspective on life through my words if I can
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes, I definitely wish I knew about Google ads, sound exchange & BMI/ascap from the moment I started making music, at first I made the journey harder on myself. I didn’t do as much Research as I should’ve but for all independent artist I would strongly recommend looking into all of those companies. Learn the business then focus on the music, doing that backwards could cause problems when trying to elevate to the next level.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Impacting somebody’s life through sharing my story is always the most exhilarating for me. Especially considering the fact that artist I looked up to listened to prior to me starting my career did those same exact things for me, music definitely help save my life.
